Having the right regulations in place is a pre-requisite for carbon storage to occur, and we're seeing good progress on this around the world. #Angel is a depleted gasfield, that once contained several Tcf of #CH4 and can be re-used to safety store #CO2. 🔄

The First Nations Clean Energy Strategy presents an important and timely opportunity to address significant existing inequity and disadvantage, and identify opportunities for First Nations communities to lead, participate in and benefit from the energy transition. The U.S. government has ordered energy firms to reduce natural gas waste as part of efforts to address climate change and promote environmental sustainability. The directive aims to minimize methane emissions, a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming and climate change. Natural gas production and processing operations often result in the release of methane, either intentionally or unintentionally, into the atmosphere. By requiring energy companies to reduce natural gas waste, the U.S. government is taking steps to mitigate the environmental impact of these emissions and promote responsible energy production practices. The order may include measures such as implementing technologies to capture and utilize natural gas that would otherwise be flared or vented, improving leak detection and repair processes, and enhancing overall operational efficiency to minimize methane emissions. By enforcing regulations to reduce natural gas waste, the U.S. government is signaling its commitment to addressing climate change, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and promoting sustainable energy practices within the energy industry. This directive aligns with broader efforts to transition towards cleaner energy sources and mitigate the environmental impact of fossil fuel production and consumption.

We welcome the passing of legislation that supports the future development of Western Australia’s future Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) industry. The legislative changes aim to enable transport and storage of greenhouse gas in WA, and encourage greenhouse gas storage projects including the Angel CCS project, a proposed large-scale, multi-user CCS Hub near Karratha. Woodside sees CCS as a strategic opportunity for Australia, and one of the key methods to abate large-scale industrial emissions. The International Energy Agency (IEA) and Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) have both identified CCS as an important emissions reduction technology in achieving net zero by 2050 or sooner. We look forward to working with the WA Government as they develop the supporting regulations and guidance so CCS projects in WA can be operationalised.

The Superpower Institute welcomes the Federal Budget's focus on Superpower industries, as a part of its Net Zero Transformation Stream of the Future Made in Australia package. The identification of industries in which Australia has a comparative advantage is applauded, as is the recognition of the two key market failures that need to be addressed in the transition to net zero: the positive externality created by first movers that introduce innovative technologies, and the negative externality created by unpriced carbon. It was terrific to see the Albanese Government acknowledge that Australia can make a significant contribution to reducing world emissions through exports from the Superpower industries. We look forward to consultation on specific policies needed to promote key Superpower industries green iron / steel and aviation and shipping transport fuel production in Australia. Next week, a decisive vote will take place in Strasbourg - will the European Parliament push to accelerate the phase-out of fossil fuels in the heavy-duty sector?   On November 21st, the European Parliament will vote on its position on the revised CO2 Standards for Heavy-Duty Vehicles. Legislation should allow every solution that drives the energy transition.   How can renewable fuels be included in the legislation? Via a Carbon Correction Factor, renewable fuels can contribute to CO2 reduction targets as their share in the market is taken into account. This complements the necessary electrification and reduces risks e.g. with view to the roll-out of sufficient charging infrastructure.   Over 90 scientists and over 120 associations and companies support the recognition of renewable fuels in reaching our climate protection goals.   Every vote will count next week - let’s reduce emissions, not solutions! 

According to estimates in the latest European Environment Agency (EEA) ‘Trends and Projections’ report, the EU has reduced net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions including international aviation, by 31% compared to 1990 levels, while simultaneously fostering economic growth; and 2022 witnessed a 2% reduction, driven by substantial decreases in the buildings and industrial sectors, while emissions from energy supply and transport saw an increase. To achieve the 2030 emission reduction target, the pace of annual GHG emission reductions in Europe must more than double compared with the annual progress seen since 2005, the EEA report says. More rapid reductions are particularly needed for the emissions from road transport, buildings, agriculture, waste and small industries, all of which are covered under the Effort Sharing Regulation. Reductions in energy consumption and growth of renewable energy must accelerate even faster to reach the 2030 targets as included in the recently adopted Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Directives. While technological evolution can contribute to reducing GHG emissions, it won't be enough. We need to decouple economic development from environmental impacts once for all. To change production and supply systems, to change consumer behaviour, and to ensure a just distribution of resources and quality of life, for us and for the generations to come.

How does Koehler contribute to climate change mitigation? 🌍💪 Back in 2014 already, we set an ambitious goal to produce more renewable energy than we need for paper production by 2030. We are pushing the expansion of renewable energy production forward and further reducing our greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency. This way, we are making a positive long-term contribution to climate change mitigation and energy security. With this field of action we are contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goal 7.
