Sending a big, green ECS thank-you to our friends from Boston Green Academy for spending two days learning, exploring, and deep-diving into all things sustainability with us!
Last week, we hosted a group of like-minded administrators and educators from BGA, a 6-12 #CharterSchool with a shared mission in a different zip code!🌎 We walked BGA through our approach to out-the-door learning by putting ourselves in the shoes of an ECS student, walking our halls and neighborhoods that enrich the ECS experience.
Not only did we walk the walk, but we talked the talk; discussing #ClimateAction and #SustainableDevelopmentGoals, and how these critical topics are weaved into our curriculum and brought to life through experiential learning. Here's to continued collaboration and innovative approaches to #GrowingCitizens 🌱👏

We're live from the second annual #EngageEveryStudent summit! U.S Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona shares a message with the 13 inaugural Program Champions: "Congratulations to the Champions who are part of the first cohort of the Engage Every Student Recognition Program! You responded to the call-to-action to ensure that students nationwide have access to high-quality, out-of-school-time learning and enrichment. But out-of-school-time learning programs like these are at risk if the resources don’t exist to keep them thriving. We need to ensure that high-quality programs are accessible in every community, and that will take everyone getting involved."

CHANGE THE WORLD WITH US! The UGE International Pack, offering world-class educational materials for less than $30 USD per student per year, represents a monumental shift in educational access and quality, particularly for students in underprivileged areas. This affordable solution can drastically change students' lives in several impactful ways:
Democratizing Education -
For a minimal cost, the UGE International Pack provides access to high-quality educational resources that were previously only available to students in well-funded schools. This democratization of education means that students from various socioeconomic backgrounds can have equal opportunities to learn and excel, breaking down barriers that have historically divided educational systems.
Enhancing Engagement and Understanding -
The rich multimedia content available through the UGE International Pack can significantly increase student engagement. Interactive simulations, videos, and digital textbooks cater to different learning styles, helping students grasp complex concepts more easily and retain information longer. This dynamic way of learning can lead to better academic performance and a more profound interest in continuing education.
Building Essential 21st Century Skills -
In today’s digital world, proficiency in technology is as essential as traditional academic skills. By integrating digital tools into their daily learning, students develop critical digital literacy skills, including how to navigate online resources, use digital communication tools, and understand basic data management. These skills are indispensable for higher education and modern workplaces.
Preparing for Higher Education and Careers -
Access to a broad range of subjects and advanced content prepares students for higher education and future careers in ways previously unimaginable. Students can explore potential career paths by accessing materials related to different fields, gain preliminary insights, and develop foundational skills that are crucial for success in competitive environments.
Fostering Independent Learning and Critical Thinking -
With the ability to access a wealth of information and learning tools, students are encouraged to become self-directed learners. They can pursue topics that interest them beyond the standard curriculum, fostering a sense of independence and critical thinking. These qualities are vital for personal and professional success, as they encourage students to question, analyze, and innovate.
Empowering Teachers and Enhancing Instruction -
The UGE International Pack also benefits teachers by providing them with a vast array of teaching aids, lesson plans, and professional development tools. This support can enhance their teaching methods, making instruction more effective and responsive to the individual needs of their students. Better-equipped teachers can create more impactful learning experiences and adapt to various educational challenges. https://lnkd.in/eNZ-gN2E

The assessor spent time over the course of the day visiting every area of the school, across differing times of the day, and the dedication to the consistency of high expectations, ensuring no learning time is wasted, was truly remarkable. In all lessons students were actively engaged, always demonstrating active listening. The assessor did not experience any disruption. Students enjoy the high expectations and rise to all occasions and opportunities to demonstrate that they want to be in the academy achieving.
The provision for support is outstanding and has been given the same level of detail and attention as other areas across the academy. The academy’s Horizon provision for students who need an alternative from the mainstream allowing them to ‘reset’ patterns of behaviour, is well resourced. Leaders understand that students with the greatest need require expert teaching. The success of the provision lies in the staff and the culture that continues from the mainstream. Students are included and have staff who do not excuse their behaviour.
Well done to all the team at Kingswood Academy on achieving the IQM Inclusive School Award with Flagship School status.

‘Every school should have a DEIJ Lead to ensure equitable outcomes’
…But what about small schools?
If you have been frustrated by advice to increase equity within a school that is not sensitive to the realities of a small international school, read on.
For small schools where everyone already holds multiple responsibilities (the proverbial ‘wearing multiple hats’), techniques such as an additional position simply may not be appropriate.
𝐃𝐄𝐈𝐉 𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐎𝐑𝐄; 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲.
So, what could leading DEIJ look like for a small school?
Redesigning structures, pathways, and systems.
If your school wants to make its mission a reality for all members of your community, we must 𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤, 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐬.
We must create procedures that lead to consistently equitable outcomes as a community action, not an initiative on one person's shoulders.
Within the international space, guidance and strategies too often assume international school communities in excess of 600 students. Thus, small international schools with <500 students trying to develop equity programs can face challenges receiving appropriate support and guidance.
As a DEIJ and leadership consultant, I draw from my time as the Head of Secondary at a small international school in Germany with fewer than 300 students. I have gained an understanding of this environment and have experience implementing DEIJ strategies that are relevant and suitable for schools facing similar challenges.
If you want to discuss how you can redesign your school systems for consistently equitable outcomes, get in touch and follow for more content like this.
