Announced by the European Commission, this initiative, launched in partnership with the African Union Commission and managed by the Africa-Europe Foundation , is supported by funding from the European Maritime, Fisheries, and Aquaculture Fund. This report, titled "Roadmap Towards 2030: Co-driving the Africa-Europe Ocean Partnership," lays out bold strategic goals to enhance ocean governance and drive a sustainable blue economy between Africa and Europe. Here are the key highlights: 1️⃣ Ocean Governance: establishing improved frameworks for the management of ocean resources. 2️⃣ Capacity Sharing: promoting knowledge exchange and policy alignment across continents. 3️⃣ Finance and Investment: enabling financial mechanisms to support sustainable ocean projects. This bold roadmap envisions a collaborative push towards 2030, spotlighting restoration, resilience, and innovative regenerative practices in ocean management. It also proposes launching the Africa-Europe Blue Resilience, Regeneration, and Restoration Hub (B3R-Hub) to drive this partnership forward. 💶 The total estimated cost for the roadmap’s implementation is €7.9 millions, covering initiatives such as capacity building, governance improvements, and promoting blue economy projects. This partnership is a huge opportunity for advancing the United Nations’s Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG14), which aims to conserve ocean ecosystems while ensuring long-term economic development. We must prioritize building capacity to map, monitor, and manage environmental risks in Ukraine's war-affected agricultural lands. This involves creating a network of science and business to utilize modern technologies like geospatial data and UAV surveys, along with soil sample analyses. Our goal is to safeguard sustainable farming and food security. However, in developing land restoration plans, we must adopt a long-term perspective, considering time demands and global challenges. We propose offering Ukrainian farmers an action plan or to-do list, starting with recommendations for land decontamination and remediation, and progressing to a sustainable farming strategy aligned with the requirements of the organic world market, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Green Deal, and the Paris Agreement. 🚨 New white paper🌊 "Governing Marine Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction: Roles and Opportunities for the Private Sector". Ocean areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ) are one of the great remaining commons of the planet and critical to sustaining life on Earth, as they represent two-thirds of the ocean, are home to millions of unidentified species and play a critical role in absorbing heat, storing excess CO2, and sustaining global ecosystems. But they do even more: these areas are also crossed by 90% of global trade, host critical data communications infrastructure and contribute to food security. The United Nations Agreement on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ), adopted in 2023, is currently being signed and ratified internationally. Private sector actors are likely to be among those most affected by the Agreement’s provisions once it enters into force. To increase the likelihood of successful implementation, we will need an “all hands on deck” approach, cross-sectoral action and expertise. This paper reports the views of 14 leading companies, from sectors including fisheries, international shipping and subsea cables, and presents four high-level recommendations for the implementation of the BBNJ Agreement https://lnkd.in/gjPUK7jC Katherine Crosman Silvia Guzzini Alfredo Giron Nava Peter Thomson Sanda Ojiambo World Economic Forum United Nations Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of The Sea (UNDOALOS) #BBNJ #BBNJAgreement #MarineBiodiversity #BlueEconomy #Ocean #ClimateWeekNYC #UNGA #RaceForRatification #SDIM24

📣 HABEMUS COMMISSIONER 📣 Today, Ursula von der Leyen introduced her proposed College of Commissioners, nominating Costas Kadis (🇨🇾) as Commissioner-designate for Fisheries & Oceans, and Jessika Roswall (🇸🇪) for Environment, Water, and Circular Economy. We welcome the Oceans Pact as a major responsibility for Commissioner-designate Kadis but urge close collaboration across all relevant portfolios—from Climate, Energy, and Food, to Transport, Tourism, and beyond 🌍 The ocean is the planet's largest ecosystem, central to food production, health, jobs, and security. It offers numerous opportunities for sustainable development, including low-trophic aquaculture, marine renewable energy, and other multi-use sectors. We look forward to working with the new Commission to ensure stronger ocean protection and sustainable use. #EUCommission #OceanClimateAction #Sustainability #OceanHealth #EUOceanWeek2024
