Patagonia or Patagucci? "𝐈𝐭 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲'𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐡*𝐭, 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞," 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐚𝐢𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠. Patagonia has asked 90 U.S. customer experience employees to either relocate to one of seven new hub locations (except HQ) by Friday or leave their jobs. This decision apparently aims to foster a stronger team culture by addressing feelings of disconnection among remote workers. Employees have been offered relocation assistance and additional PTO, but those unwilling to move will receive a severance package. Are Patagonia’s ongoing efforts to balance operational needs with its commitment to sustainability and ethical business practices…ethical? #ethical #business #organisation #corporatenews

We will be watching the culture and brand impact for Patagonia after this news. We've been a fan for years, in large part due to their strong and vocal commitment to employees and corporate values that support the greater good. This may be ending for them! Two key things to note: (1) The fact that employees have leaked the decisions speaks volumes and should be a 'five alarm fire' warning for the executive team and the founder. (2) As soon as you begin to put profits above people (sure looks like it for this situation) your culture and brand will start to decay. We hope this prediction is wrong and they find a way back--quickly--to their core value proposition. As we say all the time at Gnomes in Space: If you take care of the employees the rest will follow. For Patagonia, they seem to be forgetting that and the rest may indeed follow in the form of customers fleeing the brand and going elsewhere. https://lnkd.in/eQ3sJhBM #employeefirstcomms #peopleoverprofits

🌟 Patagonia's Bold Move: A Masterclass in Employee Care 🌟 🎄 🛍️ Every year, from Christmas Day to New Year's, #patagonia takes a bold step by closing its doors, not just for a day or two, but for the entire week – and yes, employees are paid in full. Why? Because, as Patagonia's statement eloquently puts it, "our people need a break." 🌎🤗 "At Patagonia, we do our best to not be bound by convention and to look out for people and the planet," the company shares. It's a company-wide embrace of unconventional wisdom that sets them apart in an age of profits over people. 👏🗣️ Patagonia's founder, Yvon Chouinard famously said, "Every time I do the right thing, I make money." It's a powerful reminder that sticking to your values may have short-term costs but ultimately pays off in trust and loyalty. 🚀🌟 The heartwarming aspect of Patagonia's approach is how they hope their employees return from their break with "sore legs and a few great stories." It's an invitation to adventure, reflecting the culture they've meticulously cultivated. 🌟💼 In a world where many companies profess care for their people, it's refreshing to see one that walks the talk. Working with numerous organizations, I've way too often witnessed the divide between words and actions. Patagonia stands as a shining example of authenticity in action. 💼🤝 Patagonia's dedication to taking care of their people isn't just about time off; it's about instilling a sense of purpose and mission. Employees aren't just working retail jobs; they're contributing to a cause they're passionate about. 🤔👥 I've often said that your brand is how people feel about your company, but your culture is how your employees feel about it. It's a crucial lesson – you don't dictate how your people feel, but you do control how you treat them. And Patagonia has mastered that lesson. 🌟 So, as we scroll through LinkedIn, let's celebrate Patagonia's commitment to its people and purpose. Let's be inspired to create workplaces where employees aren't just valued but cherished, where values aren't just spoken but lived. Patagonia, thank you for the masterclass in caring for your people. 🙌👏 #EmployeeCare #Patagonia #PurposeDrivenCulture" XYZatWork https://lnkd.in/e6F4rsWW

Sr. Manager, Absence Management & Compliance | Disability Management/HR Professional | Dedicated to supporting individuals with disabilities | Northeastern University School of Law class of 2024 Master of Legal Studies
It’s hard to believe it’s already been one year with Patagonia! I still remember when I saw the job posting pop up on LinkedIn and texting my brother (a fellow Patagonia fan) about it. It felt like a long shot but it was a shot worth taking and, well, the rest of that story is history. It’s been a long time since I’ve been in a position where I genuinely enjoy the work I’m doing and where I feel really good about the company I am doing the work for. I recently shared with someone that there’s yet to be a day where I haven’t wanted to go to work, and I owe so much of that to the incredible colleagues I am able to work with and the opportunity to be engaged in value-added projects. And I’d be remiss if I didn’t give a big thank you to Shannon Ellis, who helped me quickly adapt and understand Patagonia culture while I was working towards shaping and reshaping our absence management programs. Shannon also not only saw my potential, but helped me see it too. She allowed me to hone in on my strengths, clearing a runway for me to work towards enhancing absence and accommodation programs for our employees and I couldn’t be more grateful for the partnership and leadership in my first year. There’s a lot more work to do in the ever changing landscape of paid leave and accommodations, but I’m beyond grateful Patagonia is where I get to do it. #workmilestone #pataversary #oneyearanniversary #peopleandculture #absencemanagement (image description: Black travel coffee tumbler with the words “People and Culture Patagonia” written in blue on a white background).

I don't know what's sadder, that these sorts of mandates are still being thrust on people or that, this time, it's Patagonia. Is this yet another veiled #layoff? Their employees certainly seem to think so. B Corps, like Patagonia, are held to a higher standard. In fact, Patagonia's B Corp profile page rates their "workers impact score" based on the following: "𝘌𝘷𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘢 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘺’𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘣𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘰𝘺𝘦𝘦𝘴’ 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘺, 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩 & 𝘴𝘢𝘧𝘦𝘵𝘺, 𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴, 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘳 𝘥𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 & 𝘴𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘴𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯. 𝘐𝘯 𝘢𝘥𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘨𝘯𝘪𝘻𝘦𝘴 𝘣𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘮𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘴 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘧𝘪𝘵 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘦𝘳𝘴, 𝘴𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘢𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘵 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘵 40% 𝘰𝘸𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘣𝘺 𝘯𝘰𝘯-𝘦𝘹𝘦𝘤𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘰𝘺𝘦𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘤𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵 𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘣𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘰𝘺𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵." How many criteria in the above paragraph are being directly contradicted here? 🤦♀️ I don't have to tell you that "move across the country, or else" mandates only further marginalize individuals with barriers to employment, for starters. While it's doubly disappointing to see Patagonia do this, given their much more positive track record, I'd like to propose a virtual toast to the companies who continue to offer #flexibility and choice to their employees. And who don't hide behind duplicitous #RTO mandates to avoid paying severance. 🤮 PS: What's to stop their employees from saying, "yes I'll move," not actually moving, and waiting to be fired instead of resigning? At least they'd get severance that way, right?

VOSA Founder | Finance, Pay Equity & Compensation Optimization Expert | Improving Capitalism with Meritocratic Pay Equity™, Value of Service Award™ (VOSA™) & Tenure-based Employee Profit-Sharing™. Cogito, ergo sum.
#Patagonia is in the news again. Leadership team thinks they are suddenly 300% overstaffed, and tell everyone to be in office or leave. Does that sound like a great company with the right workforce strategy, compensation structure and business philosophy? No, it doesn't. A Company who figured things out will not find itself 300% overstaffed (or understaffed for that matter), and will not have to jerk from complete flexibility in working to forcing employees to relocate near the office and start commuting there or leave. I was the first to point oit 2 fundamental issies woth Patagonia: 1. Their famous #1 #BCorp rating is extremely flawed, boosted by nonsense ideological commitments, which earn outsized bonus points from B Corp. Stripping out the bonus points, their score of 16y drops to below 80, and would not even qualify for "B Corp" Certification. Their "workforce" aspect which includes compensation and HR policies is miserable. 2. Their big news of converting into an "Earth Trust" did not benefit employees (or Earth), but just the founder's ego. Employees continue to be paid and treated horribly, so the news in the article are not a surprise to me at all. Let me know your thoughts. If anyone has any https://lnkd.in/e4nS2Zvq
