As Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Advocate at The World Bank I am always interested in learning about what builds greater tolerance and respect in the work place. With 170 nationalities, the World Bank is one of the most diverse institutions in the world -- and this certainly makes it a rich and fun place to work! But our diversity can also lead to cultural misunderstandings and tensions. This week we celebrated Intercultural Week 2024 with a focus on Neuroscience and Cultural Intelligence in Navigating Emerging Global Crises. I joined an excellent session with Dr. Mai Nguyen of Culture Move on “From Survival to Thrival: How does the Brain deal with Cultural Differences?" Her main thesis is that to overcome differences we need to: 1/focus on similarities (shared values, concerns...), 2/focus on how differences can be presented in a neutral and objective way (avoiding inflammatory language often present in the media), and 3/focus on the individual (humanize numbers, listen empathetically...). All great reminders that we are more similar than we are different, and that we gain from recognizing what unites us rather than what divides us. As an illustration, Dr. Nguyen shared this Heineken ad "Worlds Apart" which says so much about how powerful and joyful we are when we connect across our differences. 🌍 Fostering a Diverse and Inclusive Team Culture 🌍 In today's fast-paced and interconnected world, it is surprising that we often still do not pay enough attention to developing a strong team culture. A good team culture not only enhances collaboration and productivity but also embraces diversity as well as open-mindedness. It is crucial to create an environment where everyone feels valued and respected, regardless of their background or beliefs. I want to share an exciting initiative that my colleagues Ferhat Çalışkan and Younes Sadik have spearheaded. They have proposed a voluntary collective (one day) fasting during the holy month of Ramadan, followed by a decentralized, hybrid Iftar (breaking of the fast) celebration held simultaneously across different locations of PwC offices. This initiative holds numerous benefits, one of which is fostering transparency and understanding of different cultures and religions within our diverse teams. By participating in this voluntary fasting experience, we have an opportunity to gain insights into the traditions and practices of our colleagues who observe Ramadan. This not only promotes empathy but also encourages open dialogue and appreciation for our differences. Transparency about other cultures and religions within our teams can lead to increased awareness and understanding, ultimately strengthening our bonds and creating a more inclusive work environment. It allows us to celebrate diversity and harness the power of varied perspectives, leading to enhanced creativity, innovation, and problem-solving. I encourage everyone of my colleagues to support Ferhat and Younes' initiative by participating in the voluntary fasting and joining the decentralized Iftar celebration. Let's embrace this opportunity to learn from one another, build stronger connections, and foster a truly inclusive team culture. Together, we can create an environment where diversity is celebrated, and everyone feels valued and empowered to contribute their unique talents and perspectives. Today, as we conclude the celebrations of our 25th anniversary on this festive day, we all want to say with one voice: THANK YOU, Miguel Casal! None of this would have been possible without your leadership! Miguel Casal, CEO and Chairman of COSTA NOVA Industria, represents the drive to bring Portuguese ceramic tradition to the world. Everyone in the company knows him. He is more present than any of us, familiar with every file and mastering every issue. This is not an exaggeration – his work ethic is exemplary, and his intelligence is boundlessly admired. He leads with expertise. Above all, Miguel is a remarkable entrepreneur and visionary. The company, which began modestly yet ambitiously at the start of the century, is now a global reference. It operates four manufacturing units in the Industrial Areas of Vagos and Ílhavo. Projects like the COSTA NOVA brand, present in over 60 countries, and ecogres show his capacity for innovation and success. "Our story has always been based on a very simple vision: innovation," he says. He is often seen cycling through the factory floor, always ensuring the quality of the final product and the well-being of his team. We know he will continue to inspire and lead, bringing ambition for success to the table every day. "Many times, we were in the right place, at the right time, with the right people. Circumstances often dictate success or failure – sometimes by a small margin. We had a mix of luck and vision," he adds. We respectfully contest this, Eng.
