2023 brought a greater mix of projects to Wisconsin’s commercial property assessed clean energy (C-PACE) program. We attribute that to a larger mix of lenders and the assistance of PACE Wisconsin stakeholder groups: counties, economic development groups, chambers, developer associations, and local utilities were essential partners in helping to spread the word about the impact of PACE as an economic development tool that creates more energy efficient buildings in Wisconsin. https://lnkd.in/dw8tHYiV

Thrilled that the first paper led by my first U-M PhD student, the stellar Claire McKenna, and with Carina Gronlund, is now out in Resources, Conservation & Recycling. From energy audits, utility bill analysis, thermostat data analysis, and interviews with 51 homeowners in Wayne and Washtenaw Counties, we find: 1. A switch to heat pumps from natural gas will raise energy burdens sharply for all participants. This will be particularly acute for low-income households. This is a function of the cold climate, poor housing stock (more below), and the relative prices of natural gas and electricity. In the figure below, (1) is for standard flat electricity rate and 2022 natural gas cost; and (2) is for standard time-of-use electricity rate and 2022 natural gas cost. It's happening in front of our eyes: all that solar mentioned in this video will need storage to even out the electricity flow. That's why I find the integration of BESS (battery energy storage systems) so rewarding: every project brings us closer to a sustainable energy future.

Moments after presenting with Rodney Hitch at the annual meeting, Brittany Cox and I hurried to the airport with that message in hand to take part in the Site Selectors Guild's Summer Summit in Charleston, South Carolina. In visiting with our site selection friends and talking with economic development peers from across the country, it became obvious that our electric cooperatives are taking a different tack than a lot of others when it comes to electricity and projects. We are taking steps to push Kentucky first in site selection through bold actions as expressed by our CEO. We are investing in diverse generation and planning for growth that will bring jobs and careers to our communities. Our investments are not limited to just generation but focus also on transmission that will bring this vast power supply to numerous industrial sites located across the state. From our served areas in high growth areas along the interstates as well as rural locations that are reinventing themselves for advanced manufacturing opportunities, our cooperatives serve the Top Industrial Sites in Kentucky. These sites represent the most viable mega sites as well as the largest number of industrial sites best suited for manufacturing, more than any other electricity provider in the state. New paper! https://lnkd.in/gDR3mdba I'm celebrating my first journal publication today! The paper, out in Resources, Conservation & Recycling, quantifies the utility bill impact of switching to a heat pump from fossil gas in a cold climate. It's more expensive than most people realize - just over $1,100 on average for our sample of 51 real homes in Michigan. This paper is not meant to discourage electrification, but to analyze ways of electrifying our housing stock that do not have severe energy burden impact for the lowest earners. We find that energy retrofits like air sealing and insulation can eliminate the ongoing cost premium for heat pumps for natural gas users, but they cost so much that they are likely out of reach for low to moderate income households. That's why we're calling on policy makers at Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy and City of Ann Arbor among others in cold climates where fossil gas heating predominates to offer programs that weave together electrification and energy efficiency.
