KHNP Launches Consultative Group for Nuclear Power Plant Engineering - Sharing engineering information and reinforcing trust between parties in nuclear power plant industry - Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., Ltd. (KHNP; President & CEO, Joo-ho Whang) launched the “Consultative Group for Nuclear Power Plant Engineering” on June 25 to share engineering information and exchange ideas between parties in the nuclear power industry. The group will comprise KHNP and 40 business partners in four fields, including design, manufacture, maintenance, and ISI(In Service Inspect), and is scheduled to interchange crucial project directions related to engineering and discuss joint response measures. At the group’s opening ceremony at the Gyeongju Hilton Hotel, participants debated on matters such as “roles and ways to become good to great companies” and “forming sound and fair relationships within the nuclear power industry” under the theme of “reinforcing trust for the future of the nuclear power industry.” They also rolled out an industry safety and health campaign under the slogan “Work Safe, Work Together!” and assured themselves of cooperating for industrial safety. DOE Study Suggests Major Cost Savings from Coal to Nuclear Power Shift According to the Department of Energy, decommissioning coal-fired power plants and building new nuclear facilities in their place could result in construction cost savings of up to 30%. The key to unlocking these savings? Repurposing as many existing assets as possible from the retired coal plants. These assets include the existing land, the coal plant’s electrical equipment (transmission connection, switchyard, etc.) and civil infrastructure, such as roads and buildings.  This isn't just about cost. It's also about our energy future. Nuclear power is one of the most reliable and carbon-neutral sources we have. Transitioning away from coal and towards nuclear could be a major step towards a more sustainable energy future. Of course, there are challenges, but the DOE's findings suggest that the benefits – both economic and environmental – could be substantial. This study should give policymakers and industry leaders plenty to think about. The Palisades nuclear plant in Michigan is set to become the first shuttered nuclear facility in the US to resume energy production, thanks to a $1.5 billion conditional loan from the US Department of Energy. The plant's owner, Holtec International, will receive the loan through the Department of Energy's Title 17 Clean Energy Financing Program, which is part of the Inflation Reduction Act signed into law in 2022. This funding will allow the 800 MW Palisades plant to restart operations, which was shut down in 2022 after over 50 years of service. However, the plan to reopen Palisades still requires approval from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and Holtec estimates the process could take another 18 months before the plant is fully operational again.
