The southeastern US is at the forefront of nuclear technology development, particularly in Generation IV nuclear technologies and small modular reactors, heralding a new era of safety and cost-efficiency. There is a large benefit to Carolinas' local and regional economies attributable to nuclear power. Thanks to this study, we can unequivocally state that the economic benefits are tremendous and include substantial jobs and profits, and a positive economic impact of $43 billion per year for the five-state region: Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.

“The legacy of EBR-II in the nuclear industry is simply unparalleled. The reactor was instrumental in demonstrating the passive safety that liquid metal pool-type reactors can provide. During EBR-II’s long run from 1964 until 1994, over 35,000 fuel elements and 366 subassemblies were irradiated. EBR-II provided critical information for advanced fuel development and materials testing, including serving as a prototype for the Integral Fast Reactor. In addition to producing 2 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, EBR-II also helped demonstrate advanced reactor control and instrumentation technology.” "EBR-II, a liquid sodium–cooled fast breeder reactor that officially operated from 1964 until it was shut down in 1994, was important on several fronts. Beyond supplying electrical power for INL, it proved a liquid metal–cooled fast breeder reactor with on-site fuel reprocessing was possible. In addition, it demonstrated the inherent built-in safety of pool-type reactors during transient events that could cause significant damage to light water reactors.”

Wylfa is back in the news... The government are reportedly in talks with Hitachi Energy to purchase the land at Wylfa, after the project was scrapped in 2019 due to rising costs. The project would've created around 9000 jobs during construction and Wylfa is seen as one of the best sites in Europe for large scale nuclear. The Palisades nuclear plant in Michigan is set to become the first shuttered nuclear facility in the US to resume energy production, thanks to a $1.5 billion conditional loan from the US Department of Energy. The plant's owner, Holtec International, will receive the loan through the Department of Energy's Title 17 Clean Energy Financing Program, which is part of the Inflation Reduction Act signed into law in 2022. This funding will allow the 800 MW Palisades plant to restart operations, which was shut down in 2022 after over 50 years of service. However, the plan to reopen Palisades still requires approval from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and Holtec estimates the process could take another 18 months before the plant is fully operational again. Last week, COG’s Macit Cobanoglu, together with Mackenzie Denyes of Nuclear Waste Management Organization, Sarah Jane Eaton of Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission – Commission canadienne de sûreté nucléaire and Weina Chong, P.Eng., M.Eng., PMP. of Bruce Power, participated on a panel moderated by Brian Fehrenbach of Organization of Canadian Nuclear Industries at the #NEXTGEN2NETZERO conference. Panelists shared how their organizations are supporting “Nuclear Energy for a Sustainable Net Zero”.     Macit noted that COG has been providing a robust collaboration platform for the CANDU community over four decades. Through a broad range of R&D programs, joint projects, OPEX sharing, and training for its utility members and supplier participants, COG contributes to the safety, reliability and economics of CANDU technology. For example, COG’s Fuel Channel Life Management program helped extend the lives of CANDU reactors by 10-15 years, resulting in billions of savings for COG’s utility members by enabling the utilities to spread out the refurbishment of their units and avoiding the shutdown of multiple units prematurely.     Panelists agreed that enhanced collaboration amongst regulators was a significant step towards ensuring a harmonized and efficient approach to licensing new reactors, and that the volume of workforce needs for building and operating new nuclear is both a challenge and an opportunity for the sector.

Economic impact of nuclear to southeast USA highlighted: The nuclear energy industry in southeast USA generates an annual economic impact of almost USD43 billion, supporting 152,598 jobs and generating USD13.7 billion in labour income, says a study released by the Southeast Nuclear Advisory Council.
