Would you sign up to this job description? 😳 Well, I didn’t but I wouldn’t change it for the world! 👍 Thrust into the world of having a disabled child, requiring long term ventilation and having a life-limited condition, not knowing where the next emergency is coming from can certainly teach you a few life skills! 😉 This beautifully illustrated diagram shows the level of complexity, chaos, multi-commitment and just damn right exhausting daily life of such families. My hat is off and my heart goes out to those families struggling this daily fight for their children’s lives and futures. 🙏 Everyday is an ongoing battle with one or more of these areas and they are not a simple solvable to-do list. No sir ree…. Some require complex long term solutions, backed up by persistent and dogged determination and some just require a simple or quiet word of common sense - more scary when it’s delivered in hush tones by mum!! 😂😂😳😂 I think what I’m trying to say is that individuals in these situations have some incredible skills (including me 😉) that can benefit employers and can juggle both life’s (work and personal) with a degree of flexibility and compassion. I’ve certainly worked for companies which have been fantastic at both. Oh, and I nearly forgot, this diagram does not contain anything related to holding down a job in addition or other parts of someone’s daily life or their family, there wasn’t enough room on here, which sometimes is the guilty feeling you get when juggling so many plates. 😵💫 It’s amazing people like Charlie Beswick promoting and supporting employers to realise this, creating space on this diagram to manage both so give her a shout if you want to get your company to this level!! Anyway, as the week has only just begun, please be supportive of your colleagues, friends and family that maybe dealing with such a huge burden of activities just to stay with their heads above water. 🥰 Please, if you’re out there with the same struggles, we are here to support (there’s always someone to talk to) so just talk if you need to as it can be lonely sometimes. "Consistency,” “discipline,” and “motivation” didn’t work for me. Here’s what did: 👉 Knowing what I want and why I want it. When times were tough as a recruiter, I never had the discipline to stay consistent for consistency’s sake. “Motivation” was like a paper house when the typhoon of life came. 🌀 The best refuge during the storm was to ask myself what I want. I could hold on to it like a lifeline. It may be: 💪 I’m working to feed my family 💪 I’m working to buy my freedom 💪 I’m working to make a difference When my reasons ran out in January 2023- I was in trouble. ☠ It was time to re-evaluate what I wanted and build a strong foundation from there. In my case, it meant leaving, but that doesn’t mean quitting is the answer for everyone. The important thing is not to fall into the trap that many do: ✖ Forget what we are working towards ✖ Want what others tell us to want ✖ Not re-calibrating when our priorities change From my experience with burnout, this was a principal cause. Once I rebuilt the foundation of what I want, I felt free, creative, and motivated again. 🔥 ✨ Now, I help other people to see clearly what they are working towards. I used to sleep at my employment to ensure everything got taken care of. It was mandated that you stay, and if you left without explicit consent - it was job abandonment. You had to be fully committed. Of course, that made sense to me, given my role in Public Safety as a professional Fire/Medic. We faced literal fires and real emergencies, all within real-time chaos. Plus, there was all the administrative work that went with it, and that was just as heavy and urgent given the uncertainty of time. When a Senior Engineering leader told me that he had been sleeping at the office due to new mandates and ownership pressures, I was taken aback. He felt he had no choice. Emails, Slack messages, and all communications were blazing with urgent matters, fire drills, and must-do-now tasks on top of keeping the lights on. His leader even asked him if he was committed. (Seriously.) There is nothing life-or-death about working at a social media company. People are being tasked with driving revenue for shareholders at their own peril. Being asked if you are committed while you pick yourself up off the carpet-tiled collab room is insane. It's one of the shittiest situations I've heard of in a while. Being laid off, underemployed, or unemployed is stressful enough. There is a support system here, and that's a bell that I answer with urgency.

What Doing the Bare Minimum Looks Like... Something caught my attention on my morning walk to my community center coffee machine. Mulch! I know what you're thinking, and yes, I do live a pretty exciting life! Other than the appearance of a fresh flower bed (but you can still see what's left of the old mulch), a closer look reveals a complete lack of effort and a practically useless mulch bed. That half-inch of fresh mulch won't last two weeks. Weeds will return promptly, run off will happen rapidly with the next Florida thunderstorm, and nothing lasting or of value will have been accomplished. Seriously, I know budget constraints and the difference between an owner and a renter mentality, but as I looked at that mulch bed this morning, some parallels to the work place came to mind. 1. Striving for the bare minimum might meet immediate requirements, but it rarely propels us forward. In both personal and professional realms, growth is the key to success. By merely meeting the minimum expectations, we limit our potential for advancement and improvement. Embracing challenges and going beyond what's expected propels us forward, and frankly, gets us noticed! 2. Building Reputation and Trust: Consistently delivering just enough can erode trust and credibility over time. Whether it's in the workplace or in personal relationships, people value reliability and dedication. Going above and beyond not only builds a positive reputation but also strengthens trust with colleagues, clients, and supervisors. It's this trust that often opens doors to new opportunities. 3. Missed Opportunities for Learning: Opting for the bare minimum means missing out on valuable learning experiences. In a world where mediocrity is abundant, it's those who consistently strive for excellence who stand out and achieve greatness. Let's challenge ourselves to go beyond the bare minimum and unlock our full potential! And if you have mulch plans this upcoming weekend...3-4 inches of depth! Are you considering leaving your current job and unsure about how much notice to give? While every company is unique, it's an industry standard to give at least two weeks' notice to your employer. I always try and encourage people to take an additional week off in between jobs if they are able. I had a situation this week where one of my candidates was planning to give a longer notice period and only take a long weekend off before starting her new role. After discussing the situation, we realized that taking an extra week off was much more beneficial to her mental well-being than to her team. Surprisingly, her team was supportive of her decision and did not push for any additional notice period greater than two weeks. Remember, your mental health and ability to re-charge are just as important as being respectful to your employer. If you are feeling burnt out, consider taking some time off between jobs to start fresh. Generally, most employers can wait that extra week for you to start. Hopefully win-wins all around!
