One of the most challenging matters to deal with in family succession is agreeing when the baton is passed down to the next generation. More often than not "letting go" can be one of the biggest challenges faced by founders or family members in leadership roles. Too often the handover occurs as a result of loss of capacity or even death which is what attracted me to this article where Queen Margrethe II’s abdication. I am sure there are plenty of details that many of us will never be privy to that supported the decision to abdicate but for me it is a healthy reminder that it’s better to plan for transition than be forced into one. Furthermore, when the handover happens in a timely manner there is the opportunity to coach and mentor the next leader. This article offers some interesting parallels between abdication and succession; the value of having both generations around to learn and communicate, plus the importance of being deliberate with handover to both respect the legacy and design new ways of working for the future. #familybusiness #legacy #leadership
