The lead-up to the end of the financial year is always a busy time. With financial reporting, tax preparation, budget planning, and performance reviews all on the agenda, it's a busy period for everyone. In recent weeks, I've been meeting with candidates and clients as they gear up for this demanding season. Here are some key insights I've gathered: 💰 Salaries: Companies are increasingly ready to offer attractive packages to secure specialised talent. The competition is fierce, and this trend is likely to continue. 👨💼👩💼 Candidates: Candidates are taking control. With the review period on the horizon, I am seeing a significant upswing in activity from lawyers who are not waiting around for July 1st. Being ahead of the pack means more choice and less competition. ✅ Opportunities: The in-house job market is becoming more active. Movement domestically and internationally, in addition to pressure to do more work in-house is driving an increase in hiring. 🔥 Hot Jobs: Global FMCG Company – Commercial Contracts & Consumer Law – 6-8 PQE Leading Tech Company – Tech Contracts & IP Law – 5-8 PQE Renewable Energy Company – Projects or Construction Law – 6-8 PQE My advice: Start the conversation now. Having worked with 4 different practices (UK and US) I feel there is a huge variance in the service levels offered by different practices / accountants and this isn't a factor of price. Some of the good ones (and it seems to be individuals rather than firms) go out of their way to undertsand and advise on business, looking for a long term partnership, whereas others seem to do the minimum for a fee.. A good Practice Accountant can make a big difference not only for stat accounts, but also business planning, tax and investments.....

What does the role of an accountant in Practice look like in 2024? Possibly very different from what you would expect… The stereotypical and outdated image of an accountant as someone who spends most of their time staring at spreadsheets has been slowly eroded over the years and is now totally at odds with reality. Here are a few of the skills and attributes that they are also looking for: Client facing skills: This reflects the shift in the role of Finance. Increasingly they are seen as business partners by organisations and the same applies to external accountants. Being a great communicator and able to build rapport is definitely an asset. Business development & networking: Senior level accountants within Practice don’t just deliver a service, they are aften responsible for generating business and attracting new clients, so having good networking skills is key. M&A experience: Accountancy firms are often hired by businesses during the M&A process to ensure they can deliver investor-grade data to support the deal. Experience and understanding of M&A is a huge plus.
