English is the most widely used language in the U.S., but our country does not, in fact, have an official language. Instead, we are a nation of 430+ languages and growing linguistic diversity: The number of people who speak a language other than English at home has tripled since 1980. Multilingualism has long been the norm in immigration destinations like NYC, where I live, but it's a new reality in many workplaces, classrooms, and communities across the country. Meeting multilingualism for the first time can be a daunting task – for an instructor in a classroom where not everyone speaks the same language or an employer tasked with fostering communication, productivity, and safety in a linguistically diverse workplace. Yet championing multilingualism is fully worth the effort: Multilingual people are consistently found to be more creative, better problem solvers, and more agile decision-makers than their monolingual peers. Multilingual nations enjoy higher levels of innovation, economic growth, global trade relations, and connectivity. What workplace wouldn’t want to enjoy these same benefits? I recently gathered a group of adult educators and administrators (like Liliana Castillo Segura and Loretta Ovueraye - Adoghe) at Achieving the Dream's #ATDDREAM conference to share best practices in supporting multilingualism in classrooms and on campuses across the country. "I am really trying to learn, but I have no opportunities to practice German. Everyone keeps switching to English." I hear this way too often, and I think this topic does not get as much attention as it should. As a native or proficient speaker, you have a role in the learning journey of the people close to you. If you want your non-German speaking employees, colleagues, or family members to finally learn German, you need to grant them the space to learn. When faced with a motivated learner, patient listening (and correcting) is a gesture that goes a long way. I know that sometimes you might think that switching to English is helpful and polite, or maybe you want to practice your English. But if you really want to help the people around you feel at home and be their most independent and productive selves, you need to let them struggle for a while. I am not saying that you are responsible for their success, but I do think that you need to keep the door that leads into the world surrounding your language open. It will help them progress faster. Not because of the “technical” aspect, but because they will feel a part of the world they are now trying to understand from a new point of view. This is how language learning works. It takes a village. And we don't call it a journey for nothing. I've been on both sides of the coin. I got insights on the topic and liked how the message about language learning was added. As a consumer, I closed my objections to the importance of learning foreign languages and got a solution to get this service at Preply. If you haven't started to learn a language by 5 years of age, it's game over. Kids are like sponges for language, whereas adult brains just aren't very good at it. An adult learner will never reach native-like fluency because of age. 🤔 I hear these expressions thrown around a lot and yet I'm not convinced. Comparing kids to adults isn't really an apples 🍎 to apples 🍏 comparison. There's a notable difference in how adults approach the new language; the methods we use, our social awareness, and how much time we can dedicate to the pursuit. "If you start “studying” a language at the age of 5, you’re not sitting down with a book and explicitly learning the language for an hour a day. You’re almost certainly in a classroom environment where that language is spoken, possibly for several hours per day.
