The great Dr. Oubre’s recent post about the importance of staying organized (which can mitigate errors) promoted me to speak of the nurse’s “brain.” As an ICU nurse, this is how I stay organized - as there’s no way to keep it all in my head. The most important sections on my “brain” are: ❓’s -> These are what I need to address with the doctor(s). 2 Do -> The evergrowing list as the shift progresses; this helps me prioritize care. As always, it’s so satisfying to ☑️ check off completed items. Lastly, as a legal nurse consultant, I create similar checklists so that important facts, questions, clarifications, etc. aren’t forgotten. How do you stay organized?

Nurse navigation may seem exclusive vs inclusive. What do I mean? By encouraging models, it may seem that the intention is to undermine providers or downplay their importance. This could not be further from the truth. Research on the benefits of nurse navigation has shown that providers also benefit from the model. Some of the reported improvements were: 1. Enhanced communication 2. Improved coordination of care 3. Increased job satisfaction Why? By providing nurses with the tools to become SMEs in their functional areas *and* by supporting them with protocols and clear boundaries, they are enabled to take work off the providers' plates. The trust that is built between functional nurse navigators and providers allows for the following: 1. Accountability sharing 2. Decreased risk of "Swiss cheese effect" 3.
