26 pages. I've documented every single job interview I've had since college graduation. My notes total 26 pages of in-depth conversations with recruiters and hiring managers at advertising agencies, technology companies, established brands, and emerging ones. The first job offer I accepted in May 2013 was for an Assistant Account Executive role at integrated advertising agency McGarryBowen — now known as dentsuMB (dentsu). To land an agency gig straight out of college was the dream for us S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University advertising grads. Agency life served me well, for a time. But then new doors opened up. Sometimes I wonder how my career would’ve panned out had I accepted another job offer or been granted an opportunity with another company. What if I had transitioned to the brand side earlier? Stayed on the agency side? Or taken a huge risk and left the secure gig to join an exciting, but risky startup? Then, I get to the bottom of my notes: Spring 2021, NEST New York… "a fast-growing company," "great team morale," and "operates with a 'check your ego at the door' mentality." Around a month into starting my job, my sister said to me: ‘You’re so much happier now.’ And she was right. I started out my career happy to do most jobs. I didn’t know exactly what I wanted or what a healthy workplace looked like. I was just happy to have a job. It was only when I landed my current role that I realized what a difference it makes to work: - With curious and driven people.  - In a role that I love. - In an industry that interests me.  - With an incredible product. And it’s all of those things that have made me so much happier and more confident. - My team makes me feel welcome and also pushes me to be better.  - The industry and role make work meaningful.  - The product is something believe in. It’s made me a better employee and a better marketer. It’s made me happier. I’m not trying to brag here. Just to show it makes a huge difference when you go from just being ‘happy to have a job’ to being happy BECAUSE of your job. If you’re in a role you don’t like you can find one you do. In fact, with an average of 180 jobs available, it's a prime time to land your next opportunity! You may feel less confident because it's vacation season, so the hiring process is slow, and nobody is working. But guess what? We also find many more merits of applying in the summer, such as fewer applicants and more attention given to applications as it's a slow time! "My title doesn't really show what I do." Titles can mean different things at different places. When I worked for Procter & Gamble, a Director could have an indirect staff in the 100s. It would be a VP/SVP-role in many companies. Unless it's a bank, where VPs are everywhere. (Get the confusion here?) You might not care if you are paid fairly. But if you're looking for a job, it's a different story. If you have a Director title, but are doing VP work: You need to make that clear in your resume. So, how do you do that?
