How can we help our communities apart from buying from local businesses? One word. Volunteer. It may seem quite obvious but volunteering can have such a huge impact not only on your community but also yourself, both your mental health and career. ‘Giving to others can also help protect your mental and physical health. It can reduce stress, combat depression, keep you mentally stimulated, and provide a sense of purpose. While it’s true that the more you volunteer, the more benefits you’ll experience, volunteering doesn’t have to involve a long-term commitment or take a huge amount of time out of your busy day. Giving in even simple ways can help those in need and improve your health and happiness.’ - HelpGuide.org So how am I volunteering? I volunteered for many years at Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway as a teen, helping out and also passed out to be a Guard. Therefore, this experience not only gave me skills that will help me when volunteering again, but those skills have also been incredibly valuable to show my skills career-wise. This week, I have begun volunteering as a Reading Friends volunteer, an initiative that has been made to tackle loneliness and help build connections. Therefore, yesterday I completed a day of training, helping me get set up for my first session. I look forward to my first session, and encourage anyone that likes the idea of this, to ask your Libraries about it. So if you have some free time, go for it!

Volunteering and wellbeing We all know that the incidence of burnout is increasing, and specialists recommend various preventive measures. I am not a specialist, but I allow myself an inexpensive recommendation designed to provide a sense of well-being: volunteering. Believe it or not, volunteering has a number of benefits. I chose to talk about two benefits that I experienced. 1. Reduces stress We all have busy periods with tasks, inherent problems, and pressing deadlines. Participating, offering assistance when it appears you're the one in need, and lending a helping hand to those in greater need can reveal the true clarity of your troubled circumstances. It can make you order your thoughts and make peace in the chaos. 2. Maintains a positive mindset People engage in volunteer activities for the benefit of others. And this connection is really helpful. Being on both sides of the barricade—as an organization representative and an individual volunteer—has led me to wonderful people. When was the last time you volunteered? How did the experience help you?

"...𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝘆𝗽𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘆?" I had an interesting conversation with friends recently, and the topic of volunteering came up. We discussed how volunteering provides exposure and experience, and how it’s often seen as an act of selflessness without any expectation of return. Then, one friend asked, "𝐼𝑓 𝑤𝑒'𝑟𝑒 𝑡𝑟𝑢𝑙𝑦 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝑛𝑜 𝑒𝑥𝑝𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠, 𝑠ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑙𝑑 𝑤𝑒 𝑓𝑜𝑐𝑢𝑠 𝑜𝑛 𝑏𝑖𝑔 𝑜𝑟𝑔𝑎𝑛𝑖𝑧𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠 𝑜𝑟 𝑔𝑜 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑝𝑒𝑜𝑝𝑙𝑒 𝑔𝑒𝑛𝑢𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑙𝑦 𝑛𝑒𝑒𝑑 ℎ𝑒𝑙𝑝?" That question really made me think. Could it be that we sometimes volunteer because, deep down, we want to be remembered? Because we expect recognition from the organizations we volunteer for? Maybe we tell ourselves it’s for the love of helping others, but in reality, we love ourselves more, hoping karma will eventually reward us. If our goal is to genuinely help, why don’t we prioritize places where our assistance is most needed—hospitals, rural areas, and social centers where we can truly make an impact? So, I wonder, is selective volunteering a form of hypocrisy?

Passionate about leveraging social media and other digital tools to connect, engage, and inspire. I love to teach!
Volunteering is when individuals offer their time, skills, and efforts to help others or contribute to a cause without expecting monetary compensation. It can involve various activities, such as assisting in community projects, supporting non-profit organizations, helping with charitable events, or providing aid to those in need. Volunteering is often driven by a desire to make a positive impact on society, support a cause one is passionate about, or gain valuable experience and skills. Volunteering has so many advantages to the volunteer. I started volunteering in the year 2012. It was fun and an amazing journey for me contributing to the community while building my skills. When I first started building my resume/CV, the very first set of work experience I proudly added was from volunteering. It wasn't just about filling a space; it was about passion and purpose. Initially, I volunteered to manage my friends' social media accounts and assist various organizations with their online presence. Some of the organizations I dedicated my time to included the 50 Pages Library, Acme Reading Club, and Borty27 Magazine among many others. These experiences not only honed my skills but also gave me the confidence to pursue paid roles in bigger organizations. But here's the thing: none of those volunteer gigs paid me. In fact, sometimes I had to chip in financially to ensure the smooth operation of these organizations or to host events. Yet, every moment spent volunteering was invaluable to me because I was gaining skills and expertise that money couldn't buy. Even now, volunteering remains a crucial part of my life. It's not just about acquiring skills or expanding my network, although those are certainly perks. It's about standing up for what's right and playing a part in society's growth and development. So, to everyone out there thinking about volunteering—whether it's for a cause you're passionate about or to gain some hands-on experience—know that your efforts matter. It's not always about the paycheck; sometimes, it's about the impact you make and the lives you touch along the way. Worthy to note, I know a lot of people that found their ways to the heart of big organizations with big paychecks through volunteering. Yes, they started as volunteers, but are now permanent staff and managers. #Volunteerism #MakeADifference #CommunityImpact #beintentional #CareerDevelopment #personalgrowth #thebecoming #TheTeacher

As many know volunteering is a huge part of my life and getting so involved with it at Guardian has helped me feel like me again (post having kids). Volunteering is not only something important to do to support your local community and help others, but it can have great benefits to you personally and professionally. Why? Professionally it can help you connect with people outside of your department at work. If your company has a volunteer committee or at Guardian we call it the Community Involvement Committee, there are opportunities to attend in person events enabling you to meet others. When volunteering a person's title goes out the window and you are working together for a common goal. It can be a great informal job interview or help you learn about other areas of your business through casual discussion. Your potential leader could see your work ethic, how you interact with others, and how you problem solve. Additionally, if you are a leader, you could meet amazing colleagues who you never met who have skills that could benefit your team. Personally, volunteering is so fulfilling, knowing that you are helping someone in your local community that without you, may not get what they need, whether it's something as simple as donating blood or visiting a local nursing home to do an activity with residents. So I challenge my network, for 2024, take some time out of your busy schedule, and give back to others! You never know how it could change your life!

Why I Volunteer 💗 Why do I volunteer? You might think it's because I grew up in a volunteering family, and that's true—that's where it all started. But my journey in volunteering has become much more than that over the years. I volunteer with the Trout Lake Community Association, at my daughter's school, with the Girl Guides of Canada, at the Calgary Stampede, with the International Home Furniture Rep Association, and the New Ventures BC organization, to name a few. If there's an opportunity to lend a hand, I'm there. Why? Because I get something out of it. Yes, I have insights and experiences to share with these organizations, but the real reason I keep coming back is because of what I learn. Every volunteering opportunity pushes me to expand my boundaries, to step outside my comfort zone, and to grow as a person. It's not just about giving; it's about gaining a deeper understanding of the world and the people in it. For me, volunteering is guided by my three core pillars: my family, my community, and the industry I'm in. These pillars shape who I am and how I choose to give back. Volunteering is one of the most important ways I can contribute to these areas, and it enriches my life in return. Here's something important to remember: when people call out for volunteers, they're really looking for you. They're not searching for some top CEO or someone who you think knows it all. They're looking for your voice, your unique perspective. Every bit of insight and energy you bring helps move an organization forward. So, when you hear the call, just know it's for you. So, I pose this question to you: How are you volunteering? How are you giving back to your community, your family, and the industry you're a part of? Let's continue to learn, grow, and give together.
