Rugby's greatest championship, the Six Nations is just around the corner🏉 Sadly, rugby is too often marred by concussion and brain injury. As a community our main concern is about the long term effects on brain health (TBI) and reflected by clinicians, hence the importance of understanding brain injuries in sport and trying to make games like rugby safer. This study, led by Michail Ntikas found that 31% of patients with seemingly minor injuries and negative results on a CT showed persistent functional limitations after TBI at the six-month follow up. The article by Ntikas and his colleagues is timely and addresses an important topic, because a subgroup of those who experience [mild TBI] continue to report lingering symptoms beyond the typical recovery window, As a step in the right direction, players in the forthcoming six nations will wear smart mouthguards to detect head injuries that require off-field assessment. The area still remains poorly understood and there is plenty more to achieve in TBI! Six Nations Rugby #medicalimaging #rugbyunion
