Thanks for sharing Jonathan Snicker. Brain health in sport is an important duty of care that’s currently not being addressed quickly or adequately enough. This research once again suggests females are more susceptible to brain injury, such as sub concussion or concussion, and the impact of a brain trauma might be more significant on female brains. We know the problem. We have the interventions (eg Rezon | Certified B Corp Rezon Halo) Why are we still doing so little? Findings from this study show, in large animal models of concussion, females had a higher population of smaller axons, which researchers demonstrated are more vulnerable to injury. They also reported that in these models, females had greater loss of sodium channels after concussion. “The differences in brain structure not only tell us a lot about how brain injury affects males and females differently but could offer insights in other brain conditions that impact axons, like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease,” said Smith. “If female brains are more vulnerable to damage from concussion, they might also be more vulnerable to neurodegeneration, and it’s worth further research to understand how sex influences the structure and functions of the brain.” #brainhealthmatters #womeninsport #femaleathletehealth #empowerwomen #gendergaps #gebderdatagap

This is a tricky one. Differential diagnosis in MSK can be challenging, especially in case of more coexisting conditions. I have previously posted a case of tennis leg syndrome in association with medial gastrocnemius vein thrombosis: this is a similar case but trickier as the vein involved is the small saphenous one. According to my personal experience the association between tennis leg injury and thrombosis is far more frequent than reported in literature, I would say between 30% and 40% of patients with TL walking in my clinic will show some vascular disease. The mechanism resposnable for this high rate could be related to either the limited weight bearing due to pain (so less muscular pump) or vessels compression by intramuscular hematoma (in case of more severe injuries). Now, I am not a vascular sonographer, but my clinical suspicions have always been confirmed by specialists (even if sometimes it took more than one opinion). So the take home message is that MSKUS can be a great tool to roughly screen non-MSK consitions, with 2 main benefits for patients: - avoid useless or harmful MSK treatments - refer patient to the correct specialist avoiding loss of time Don't stop at the first condition that you might bumped into, search for more. - I suggest to watch the clip on laptop full screen -

Most of us know that protecting your head in dangerous situations is priority number one, and while sometimes we can manage to do that – such as wearing helmets when bicycling or playing sports – we are not always in a position to protect ourselves at all.

Do high contact team sports cause MND? Specifically do rugby union, rugby league, aussie rules, and soccer cause MND, and can we read across from NFL study findings? The comprehensive 2021 US study below considers the 2 closely related questions of "What are the incidence and mortality rates of [MND] in athletes who played in the National Football League (NFL)?" "Findings: In this cohort study of all 19,423 NFL athletes who debuted between 1960 and 2019 and played at least 1 professional game, the athletes had nearly 4 times higher incidence and mortality rates of [MND also called ALS] compared with the US male population, adjusting for age and race. Among these athletes, those with a diagnosis of [MND] had played [NFL] for approximately 2.5 years longer than those without [MND]." 4 additional observations: i) these results cannot just be explained away or dismissed as small sample effects to restore a false sense of reassurance or complacency- because this is based on a huge cohort over time, ii) statistical correlation does not necessarily mean causation- but it might well do, iii) the enhanced risk for NFL payers (roughly adjusted for latent cases yet to appear) still seems to be less than 0.5% lifetime risk, iv) any enhanced risk in similar non-NFL sports could be lower... or higher (for example the tackles per player per game rate can be much greater and the kit protection factor much lower in rugby union and league than in NFL.)

It is the persistency it is the training it is the mental status it is the final goal leading you across 30' of running in circle. Our job in Healthcare is similar. Step by step day by day and if it is not you running that step everyday a gap remain. Probably if it would exist a relay / handover run at 10km this would better represent the cancer patient journey for companies, doctors, technician and nurses. Connecting dots across a long run like cancer fight is. Step by step to the goal.

We always hear, “Play ball!” We never hear, “Play ball! But, play ball while also appropriately nurturing your UCL, particularly in the early onset of the season.” If we were to ask umpires to remind of us of the increased risk of injury in the early part of the season, well...playing ball just wouldn’t be the same. Nevertheless, it is important to remember that spring training and the early part of the season for players at all levels is a time when the likelihood of a UCL injury may increase. Our friends and colleagues at ZetrOZ Systems are working with team physicians and trainers to help overhead athletes (pitchers) manage the micro trauma evident in soft tissue following a game or heavy work (i.e.practice, intrasquad). This work can be particularly important early in the baseball season when tendon strength is compromised following an offseason. This message serves as an annual reminder to get out in front of soft tissue repair by using sustained acoustic medicine, or SAM, following days where the throw volume and intensity is high. This can be particularly important to pitchers and middle infielders where UCL injury can be most common.
