I’ve seen first-hand the devastating impact a #HospitalClosure can have on the community it serves. I hope the communities that rely on the hospitals in this list confront these circumstances with a forward-thinking, innovative approach that will allow them come out on top in the long-run. 'AMBULANCE RAMPING' This #Tasmanianargument seems true of all Australia, and possibly of other countries. Deaths from #ambulanceramping outside hospital #emergencywards is not an issue peculiar to Tasmania. And Dr Paul Scott has pinned it down directly and correctly to an insufficiency of beds in #publichospitals. In my State, South Australia the issue was exacerbated by the replacement of the old Royal Adelaide hospital by the new hospital with a smaller bed capacity. In general, however, this boils down to insufficient funding. Funding which in Australia rests on the one government with the overwhelming #taxationpower, the #CommonweathGovernment. Instead of kowtowing to a #mediawhipped ethos in the interests of #bigcapital the Commonwealth needs to abandon the trend to #taxreduction and instead replace it a socially more equitably system that also yields greater revenue. The Alberta government has signed a landmark 10-year contract with STARS, ensuring that emergency medical services (EMS) remain robust and accessible across the province. This agreement guarantees that Albertans, particularly those in rural and remote communities, will continue to receive swift and effective medical response from the iconic red helicopters of STARS. Premier Danielle Smith expressed, "Every Albertan deserves access to the best-quality health care, no matter where they are in our province. Through STARS, we connect rural and remote communities to critical health care services, improving patient outcomes and providing assurance to families. This new agreement means Albertans can rely on another 10 years of highly skilled medical professionals responding to crises wherever they happen." This performance-based agreement is a significant milestone in Alberta’s commitment to timely life-saving care. STARS' fleet of air ambulances and expert medical personnel are crucial in delivering EMS across the province, addressing the unique challenges of remote and rural health care. Minister of Health Adriana LaGrange highlighted the importance of this partnership: "This 10-year contract with STARS represents a significant step forward in strengthening emergency medical services in remote and rural areas. It underscores our commitment to ensuring that all Albertans have access to high-quality health care when and where they need it." STARS, with a proven track record of exceptional care, will continue to be a cornerstone of Alberta’s EMS network. This long-term collaboration aims to set new standards for emergency medical response, improving patient outcomes and stabilizing air ambulance services across Alberta. Martin Long, parliamentary secretary for rural health, added, "In locations with limited road infrastructure, air ambulance operations are critical to support urgent health care needs. This contract will provide a new era of resilience and preparedness in communities." Our new Quick Response Force has officially launched! By swiftly dispatching EM providers to IHS or Tribally operated facilities with a coverage gap, our new program ensures continuous, culturally responsive emergency department care for Native patients. While good ED care is vital everywhere, it's especially critical on remote reservations where a patient transfer could take hours. As Quick Response Force lead Arthur Sakakihara-Chavarria (Mescalero Apache) pointed out, there isn’t always a local provider pool to tap for a replacement when an EM physician can't report to duty. Our ABEM physicians and advanced practice providers are on call at all times to ensure coverage. They're also trained in culturally responsive care. As our President Whittney LaCroix said, “Visiting an emergency room can be an extremely vulnerable moment for a patient. Looks like Florida is moving toward authorizing certain #hospitals to be designated "rural emergency hospitals," enabling them to participate in a federal program that provides enhanced funding as a way to address the financial straits many #ruralhospitals are in and avoid altogether shutting down facilities in communities that simply can't afford to be without at least emergency care. The program is AN answer, not THE answer, to the financial difficulties rural hospitals face, and it’s left to be seen how these conversions will affect #accesstocare for folks in affected rural communities.
