Go easy when interviewing a candidate. A lot of qualified candidates are still unemployed due to massive layoffs. Some may be unemployed for more than 6 months to a year and probably more. Understanding their mental state, attending interviews with a smile and positive energy is not easy nowadays.

Using an ATS resume service to get your resume past a company's ATS system, all the name of fighting technology with the same technology to chase after ghost jobs that may have already been filled internally... There has to be a better way of going about these things. And I'd like to believe that having more conversations about the topic will lead to the ability for people to overcome differences and find a true solution to an ever-increasing problem that plagues job-seekers and companies alike.

We hired someone who is 55+ with over 25 years of work experience for one of our open positions. During the interview, he mentioned he was a bit hesitant while applying for the job, thinking he would be rejected because of his age. But he was surprised as no one even asked that question and the interview was only focused on his experience and skills. During the salary discussion, he asked me- if we were aware of his age. I said- It doesn’t matter here, what matters is your skills and experience. He was amazed to hear that and mentioned that he had been laid off from his previous job because of his age. He also mentioned that he’s excited to work with us, especially since it’s been 6 months since he got laid off. This experience is a reminder for all jobseekers: It’s not about the number of years you’ve lived, but the value you bring. In today’s job market your skills and experience are what truly count. Don’t let age hold you back and focus on showcasing what you bring to the table 😇 It’s time not to judge people based on their age but on their skills and experience. Companies say it's hard to find good talent these days. Hiring someone who was laid off is not hard. Hiring someone with gaps in their resume is not hard. Hiring someone with 'open to work' banner is not hard. Hiring someone who is a 70-80% fit is not hard. What's really hard is overlooking great talent in the pursuit of the perfect candidate

💡 Employers usually know whether or not they want to hire you within the first 5 minutes. 👀 The tell me about yourself response is CRUCIAL. Here’s an example of a response you can practice ⬇️ ➡️ Start with what you’re currently doing, or most recently did if you’re unemployed. ➡️ Explain your previous experience and how it aligns with the role. ➡️ Tell them why you applied for the role and how excited you are to learn more about it.
