🚨 You should be outraged! Your tax dollars are being spent on oxygen being marked up 10,000% (AKA price gouging, exploitation of a medical necessity, monopolistic control, gatekeeping, medical profiteering)🚨 Veterans and First Responders Deserve Free Access to Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) Veterans and first responders take on the jobs most people wouldn’t dare to do. They face mild and traumatic brain injuries from rifle fire, blasts, and intense training, and both groups are at high risk for PTSD. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has the potential to provide immense relief for these issues, yet because of monopolies and a profit-driven healthcare system, it remains inaccessible to most unless they meet a narrow range of FDA-approved conditions covered by insurance. The numbers are staggering: over the past decade, we’ve lost more than 60,000 veterans to suicide. In 2021 alone, 6,392 veterans died by suicide, and the rate among veterans is consistently 50% higher than that of non-veterans. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for veterans under 45. First responders also face alarmingly high rates of suicide—37% have contemplated suicide, and their suicide rates are significantly higher than the general population. Data shows first responders are more likely to die by suicide than in the line of duty, with up to 25% of EMS workers reporting symptoms of PTSD. Meanwhile, the cost of HBOT hasn’t changed since 2008, as the system profits off Medicare contracts. We’re talking $2,000 for just a few units of oxygen—a 10,000% markup—paid with our tax dollars through Medicare. For instance, the founder of the Oxford Center paid $120,000 to save her daughter using HBOT, and that price remains the same today for 60 sessions. Breathing pure oxygen under pressure should be a basic human right, not a luxury controlled by a few. We are losing veterans and first responders to suicide—lives that could be saved with access to real HBOT. Meanwhile, knock-off versions like mild HBOT are allowed to charge hundreds of dollars for compressed air, misleading people into thinking they’re receiving real therapy. This therapy shouldn’t cost $2,000 per session—it should be $20 at most. As a current board member overseeing the quality of CHVP course content, I am fully engaged in taking the course myself. Today, I had an AHA moment regarding Texas municipalities, school districts, tribal entities, religious entities, and MEWAS being ERISA exempt and subject to state law regulation. Specifically, Texas House Bill 2002 could empower these entities to demand that certain exam costs be applied to deductibles and that BUCAs accept accumulators. Do you have a different perspective on this conclusion? Every NJ Resident Deserves Opportunities for Recovery from Mental Illnesses and to Achieve their Goals My experience with severe depression began in 2003 when my brother Mike took his life. That alone was a shock to me, and it was even more shocking to learn at that time that he had struggled with bipolar disorder for about 15 years. Soon after, I was diagnosed with depression and in 2012, I had a suicidal crisis. I then understood what Mike experienced. I went to Carrier Clinic, where I underwent a major transformation and I observed others transform — from withdrawn, angry and unwilling to participate in therapeutic activities to opening up and embracing all that the Carrier Clinic team offered. Not everyone is fortunate enough to receive life-enhancing — and, in many cases, life-saving — behavioral health care services because of the workforce crisis and other barriers, such as stigma and a lack of parity in insurance plans. The workforce crisis, in particular, and the limited funding for provider organizations that primarily serve Medicaid beneficiaries are the focus of the New Jersey Association of Mental Health and Addiction Agencies' (NJAMHAA’s) new campaign, Diverse Faces: All Are Worthy of Full Investment. https://lnkd.in/eWYSfYUW   Investments in the state’s behavioral healthcare system are essential for New Jersey residents to achieve a high quality of life.
