Did you know that Pennsylvania is home to 17 million acres of forest? More than half a million of those acres are in Allegheny National Forest. We are happy to have contributed to the health of vitality of the ANF through our extensive work and partnerships there to improve water quality and conserve land for wildlife and future generations This map, created for Conserve magazine in 2019, shows locations of WPC's forest tree plantings through 2019, including some in the ANF. And it shows the distribution of eight forest types in PA. The number of trees planted in 2023 accumulated to an amazing total of 103,000! Planting for the Future’s goal is to work with industry, wildlife groups, the Outdoor Heritage Fund, and private landowners to create large-scale tree and shrub plantings on private land that will serve as habitat for future generations. TNC uses several means to protect and restore the longleaf pine forest. TNC and its partners are helping existing forests thrive by working across nine states using regular controlled burns and letting natural wildfires burn through when developed areas are not at risk. Another way we protect the forest is through land acquisitions and conservation easements. By knitting together large swaths of connected habitat we hope to bolster populations of threatened and endangered species. We also believe that by empowering private landowners (who hold 86% of potential longleaf pine habitat) to reintroduce longleaf pine trees onto their property it is not only creating new forests but also generating sources of income. Interesting info from our friends at Milwaukee County Parks-Natural Areas Program, whose restoration work dramatically (and positively) impacts their slice of the Lake Michigan Basin: "Mapping tree dbh (diameter at breast height) is one of the types of plant surveys our staff conducts. This data allows us to capture tree size by species, the overall composition of the forest canopy, and the diversity of tree species present. With this data we can identify gaps in the canopy that may need to be filled in, determine if some species of trees are failing to regenerate and are aging out, and whether a single species of tree dominates the site or if there is a healthier mix of species. Through this type of mapping our team is better able to plan future restoration efforts in our Parks."

Super excited today to launch of Forest Love initiative and announce our partnership with Chloris Geospatial. You can learn more about the partnership from the Chloris post below. Bottom line for us is that we really see their technology as a game changer in our collective efforts to understand and better protect, yes, better love our forests and all the magical things they bring us. Why Forest Love? Pond Foundation wants to highlight and nurture the spiritual connection between humans and forests and the word ‘love’ captures how we feel about forests and how we want to inspire others to feel about them. We could have called it the Forest Protection Initiative, or something similarly bland and boring, but there’s nothing bland or boring about forests.   Forests teem with vibrant, magical life; they’re great for the planet, for so many species and for humans too. We see people as being integral to forest ecosystems, not separate from them and not a part that should ever be separated by political or forest management decisions. We acknowledge, deeply respect, and love the role that indigenous and local communities play in protecting forests the world over. A central part of Forest Love’s work will be to help communities secure the resources they need to continue their work to both protect their forests and grow their communities. Another part is to help people who have become disconnected from forests to find reconnection to that most ancient current.   Our goal. So many forests are under threat – from logging, fire, mining, agricultural clearance, pests, and disease and most insidiously, from climate change. If we lose them, we lose life itself. Our goal is to support the protection of as many hectares of forest as we possibly can. We'll share more about Forest Love in future posts, but for now, we're celebrating this partnership with Chloris Geospatial that will underpin this work.
