National Distribution of Certified Peer Support Specialists in the United States by State, District, and Territory This report presents an overview of the number of certified substance use and mental health peer support specialists across the U.S. Data was collected from state-approved certifying entities and state behavioral health agencies between August 2023 to July 2024. The report details the types of certifications available (substance use, mental health, or integrated) and provides per capita figures for peer support specialists in each state, district, and territory. This analysis helps illustrate the distribution and availability of peer support specialists nationwide. A question I get all the time as a Public Defender is "What is your biggest challenge to work/life balance?" People expect me to say so many things... I have been a Public Defender for 25 years in 3 different states, so I speak from experience. My biggest challenge is finding a therapist. As lawyers, we are one of the highest categories of professionals for substance abuse, mental health issues, suicide, high blood pressure, heart issues, and probably a whole slew of illnesses I can't think of right now. Therapists are a necessity for those that practice law. As Public Defenders, we are a special category of " crazy" (I say that as I admit, I am in fact crazy). The difficulty with finding a therapist is either judgement for what we do or they want to hear our fascinating stories. I need help with my stress and my personal life. I don't need judgement or to entertain. What you will find is that entire offices of PDs have the same therapist because we get excited if we find a good fit for us. So for new PDs, I would advise that you speak to others in your office about who they see. Now the best part of being a PD, we are all in therapy and generally, our bosses acknowledge that sometimes we need off to go to therapy.
