Artists of the Coquelin school reason this way: The theater is a convention, and the stage is too poor in resources to create the illusion of real life; therefore the theater should not avoid conventions.…This type of art is less profound than beautiful, it is more immediately effective than truly powerful, in it the form is more interesting than its content. It acts more on your sense of sound and sight than on your soul. Consequently it is more likely to delight than to move you. So then, since the theatre is limited to the conventions of beauty, the immediate effects of sound and sight and simple delights, it is up to us, the makers and players of theatre, to bring the profound, the powerful, the interest in content, and our ability to truly move an audience. Theatre brings the convention. We bring the intention.

Today is World Theatre Day. Since 1962 World Theatre Day has been celebrated by International theater organizations, theater professionals, and theater lovers all over the world on the 27th of March. This year, the International Theatre Institute is privileged to have Jon Fosse, the Norwegian playwright and novelist, and last year's Nobel Prize Laureate in Literature, crafting the Message for World Theatre Day 2024. Our visible, external appearance is different from everyone else’s, of course, that is all well and good, but there is also something inside every one of us that belongs to that person alone—which is that person alone. We might call this their spirit, or their soul. Or else we can decide not to label it at all in words, just leave it alone. But while we are all unlike one another, we’re alike too. People from every part of the world are fundamentally similar, no matter what language we speak, what skin color we have, or what hair color we have. This may be something of a paradox: that we are completely alike and utterly dissimilar at the same time. Maybe a person is intrinsically paradoxical, in our bridging of body and soul—we encompass both the most earthbound, tangible existence and something that transcends these material, earthbound limits.
