Pharmacogenetic testing....is it a game-changer for individual health? Check out this great podcast session to learn more. When I hear that you can reduce adverse drug affects by 30%, eliminate the "trial & error" approach to medications (talking to you mental health drugs!) and reduce the time needed to get employees on the correct drug for them, it certainly has my attention. GLP-1 is a hormone that we all have. It affects primarily insulin regulation, speed of digestion after eating, and the feeling of fullness. GLP-1 therapy mimics the hormone. Take a look at Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk stock. A primary driver of their momentum appears to be around GLP-1. Hims & Hers Health Inc stock also surged 25%+ the day they announced they will offer GLP-1 injections. Simultaneously, 40%+ of Americans are classified as obese, and it appears there’s a regulatory and societal push for insurance providers to include obesity treatment. There are certainly risks that should be discussed with a doctor before taking these therapies. Not medical or investing advice. Did you know that far fewer women than men are used in clinical trials and medical research? Yep, it's true. Back in the day women weren't deemed important when it came to medicine, it was all about the man and the male body. Sadly a lot of this still exists. Women are seen as a bit trickier to use in research because we have periods, pregnancies, menopauses and all the hormone fluctuations. We are less of a level playing field and we can cost more to include in research. Critically, we also have different physiology, even down to our cell biology. So the findings from research done on males doesn't apply very well to us in many cases. But the findings are applied to us anyway. Some diseases manifest differently in women, we get different symptoms – for instance with heart attacks. We get MUCH more autoimmune disease, thyroid disease, osteoporosis and other conditions, and we often need different doses of drugs, but gender is often not considered while prescribing. Researchers from Truveta, a health data analytics company, analyzed electronic health records for more than 18,000 adults, all of whom had overweight or obesity, who were using these medications in the real world between May 2022 and September 2023.
