The latest form AHA Market Scan: Will AI Help Address Our Behavioral Health Crisis? It is still early in its evolution, but artificial intelligence (AI) is assisting some clinicians in the way they diagnose and provide therapy for behavioral health patients. The hope is that AI may be able to help providers improve access for the growing number of patients who need care. The applications, both home-grown in health systems and those from innovative startups, are drawing interest from researchers, payers and investors alike. I'm pleased to share Brightside Health's latest research paper in JMIR Publications that looks at the role of #AI in #crisis #prediction among #behavioral #health patients. While use cases for AI in healthcare have grown, there has been limited research on using AI for the purpose of mental health crisis prediction. This peer-reviewed research analyzed data from 460 patients on the Brightside Health telehealth platform, including 260 patients who reported suicidal ideation with a plan to act on it, and 200 patients who did not endorse suicidal ideation. Using a simple prompt design Chat GPT-4 results approached those of trained clinicians in predicting suicidal crisis. Suicide is notoriously difficult to predict. This supports the notion that generative AI holds great promise for identifying patients at risk of #suicide and thus enabling the delivery of more timely care to those who need it most. How do you feel about AI in mental health? Some people are freaked out. Some people are excited. I'm intrigued. This newly published research from Brightside Health (where one of the co-founders is a psychiatrist, Mimi Winsberg, M.D.) shows that we could use AI to assist in identifying folks who are at increased risk of suicide. Are we replacing human counselors and psychiatrists with AI? Nope. Not at all. Are we using AI to help mental health clinicians inform and improve treatment? Yes! I'm all for it. LLM-based applications for mental health have tremendous potential to make support available for therapists and individuals who seek mental health support or treatment, but there are also risks. A number of factors need to be considered to determine whether AI mental health applications are ready for deployment into clinical care. Rigorous evaluation and transparency in reporting is needed to support consumer autonomy and organizational decisions about the deployment and use of AI-based technologies. Led by Betsy Stade, Johannes Eichstaedt at Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) and Stanford Center for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine and Imaging (AIMI), and Jane Kim and I reviewed guidance on evaluating generative AI applications for readiness for deployment and implementation. We found that current frameworks are insufficiently tailored to unique considerations for AI and mental health. We introduce the READI, a framework for evaluation of AI mental health applications, established based on foundational principles of transparency, consumer autonomy, maximizing benefits and minimizing harm. It comprises considerations of Safety, Privacy/confidentiality, Equity, Effectiveness, Engagement, and Implementation. The framework can be used to evaluate whether AI mental health applications are ready for clinical deployment, and could form the basis for continuous evaluation of these applications.
