Hey, Larian Studios, this should make you proud: I'm crunching through the data on my romance in games survey, and out of 446 respondents, 50% cited Baldur's Gate 3 as a favorite romance game of all time. Mass Effect and Dragon Age are still very high on the list, but you've surpassed every other game by far. AMAZING JOB, folks! And an extra special shout-out to Baudelaire Welch for their leadership on the romances. BG3 has made a big difference to the future of romance in games, judging by preliminary data. I'll publish more as it emerges (and in my upcoming book), but thought you would want to know about this.

What books are shaping how you plan to show up in 2024? As we ease into the end-of-year slow down, I picked out four books that I’m spending time with this holiday season (in addition to catching up on video games like Zelda, Spiderman, etc. 🫣). First up is ‘It’s Not You, It’s Capitalism’ by Malaika Jabali. Then ‘Know Your Price’ by Andre M. Perry. Afterword I’ll be re-reading ‘Hammer and Hoe’ by Robin D. G. Kelley and Race for Profit by keeanga-yamahtta taylor.

This simple system creates a fun and unpredictable game that can be used to settle disputes or simply for entertainment.

My new article has been published in the March-April issue of the European Go Journal. This time, I write about the Ear-reddening Game, one of the most famous games in go history, as well as Michal Martychowiec’s art project “Reading History” that features it. These are games in which a 'making' activity, and creation of a concrete artifact are central to the gameplay. Prominent examples are 'A Field Guide to Memory' by Jeeyon Shim and Shing Yin Khor, and 'A Mending', also by Shing Yin Khor. It's inspired by the narrative structure of 'Thousand Year Old Vampire' - a game by Tim Hutchings, and the good feels of Frank Capra's 'It's a Wonderful Life'. I have made Community Copies available, so that people who want a copy but can't afford $8 can download them. It's kind of gratifying that all of the Community Copies I made available last night have been snapped up (people are obviously finding the game, and want to have it), but a little disappointing that I've made no actual sales. In theory, the free copies are supposed to be funded by the sales, and by 'pay it forward' tipping. Anyway, I'd love you to go and take a look. Philosophical conversations with good voice acting in games may enhance a story that's already strong at the core, but they don't make a weak story good. This is why I didn't care much for Final Fantasy 12, no matter how much I wanted to like it, but its predecessor and sister game (Final Fantasy Tactics) was so amazing. Let's core and compare their stories: FFT - a noble youth discovers that he's fighting on the wrong side, but too late to save his best friend's sanity. He spends the rest of the game trying to make things right as a corrupt church manipulates everyone from the shadows. Meanwhile, the best friend topples society and only in the end realizes that he's lost his soul. FF12 - some country fights for independence against some other country. Some theme about brothers that hardly has any screen time. Oh yeah, and the bad guys from FF14 (sort of) are puppet masters. I think it's clear why one is more memorable than the other, at least among the fandom that I know and belong to. 12 certainly has its fans, and it's pretty with a cool world, but it doesn't tend to be one of the major games in the franchise that I see referenced all that often. #narrativedesign #gamewriting
