Today, numerous solutions are available for long-distance hydrogen transport as #LOHC, #GreenAmmonia and #LiquifiedHydrogen Today, Shell and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' agreement to jointly develop technologies for liquefied hydrogen carriers is an additional contribution to long-distance hydrogen transport. This collaboration will have to be followed as it combines HD Hyundai's high level of expertise in shipbuilding with Shell's leadership in the hydrogen economy.

HYDROGEN: DNV awards AiP to HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’s electric #liquefiedhydrogen carrier DNV has awarded approval in principle (AiP) to HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Co., Ltd. (HD KSOE) for its electric propulsion liquid hydrogen (#LH2) carrier design concept that could enable 80,000m3 of LH2 storage and transportation. Julie Fallon, executive vice president of technical and energy development at Woodside Energy, stated, “We have made clear progress in the pursuit of developing cost-effective and flexible large-scale liquid hydrogen shipping supply chains to support our customers’ needs, thanks to the investment and collaborative effort of all parties involved.” Jotaro Tamura, managing director of MOL (Asia Oceania) and senior management executive officer of Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd., noted, “We would like to use our technical and operational knowledge, cultivated through many years of shipping experience, to continuously contribute toward the establishment of a hydrogen supply chain. Japanese shipowner Mitsui OSK Lines has teamed up with Australian energy company Woodside, South Korea's HD Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering Co (HD KSOE), and Korean shipowner Hyundai Glovis to explore solutions for the bulk transport of liquid hydrogen. The four companies have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding to study the technology, safety, construction, operation, and economics of a liquefied hydrogen (LH2) carrier with 80,000 cbm tank capacity. Woodside, HD KSOE, and Hyundai Glovis have been working on this project since 2022 and approached MOL to join their study. The aim of the study is to establish a liquefied hydrogen supply chain in Asia and other regions. This joint effort is a significant step towards achieving a more sustainable future by exploring alternative forms of energy transportation. HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE) has signed a MoU alongside Hyundai Glovis of Korea, Woodside Energy of Australia, and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) of Japan. Their collaborative goal is to establish a comprehensive value chain for the maritime transportation of liquefied hydrogen. The four companies seek to develop safer, more efficient and environmentally friendly technologies by 2030 to better transport hydrogen by sea. In 2022, HD KSOE set on a joint venture with the Korean logistics firm and the Australian energy giant to delve into international trade dynamics and ship operations pertinent to maritime liquefied hydrogen transportation. HD KSOE's ambitious roadmap includes the development of a large-scale liquefied carrier by 2030, building upon its notable achievement in 2022 of unveiling Korea's inaugural hybrid engine, utilizing both LNG and hydrogen. Liquid hydrogen tankers a waste of money According to a Rethink Energy report, the high liquefaction cost on top of the critical requirement that the fuel needs to be maintained at –252.87°C, makes liquid hydrogen (LH2) too expensive of an option to survive in the changing shipping and trade market. However, that’s not the view taken by some big industry players who are beginning a feasibility study into the design of new LH2 bulk carriers. Japanese shipping company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) alongside Australian energy firm Woodside Energy, South Korean shipbuilders HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Co., Ltd. (HD KSOE), and Hyundai GLOVIS are exploring the potential of transporting liquid hydrogen in bulk across oceans. The collaboration was initiated by Woodside, HD KSOE, and Hyundai Glovis back in 2022. MOL’s participation comes through a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MoU), focusing on studying the technology, safety, construction, operation, and economics of a carrier with an 80,000 cubic meter tank capacity. The latest liquefied hydrogen carriers come to light with the support of 4 international companies ◾ Korean shipbuilding conglomerate joins hands with Australian energy firm, Korean and Japanese shipping companies for hydrogen transport value chain ◾ HD Hyundai will develop a commercial large liquefied hydrogen carrier by 2030 in accordance with the hydrogen value chain cooperation with global leaders in the sector, the South Korean shipbuilding conglomerate said ◾ According to the announcement, HD Hyundai’s shipbuilding holdings company, HD Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering, or HD KSOE, recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Woodside Energy, a major Australian energy company, and Hyundai Glovis, a Korean shipping firm under Hyundai Motor Group, and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, or MOL, a Japanese shipping company, to pioneer the global hydrogen transportation market. ◾ Under the memorandum, the four parties plan to develop safe, efficient maritime shipping technologies with less carbon emissions by 2030. HD KSOE has already been co-developing maritime value chain solutions for the export and import environment of liquefied hydrogen and ship operation with Woodside Energy and Hyundai Glovis since 2022. ◾ The shipbuilder said it expects that MOL’s decades-long experience in transporting liquefied natural gas will be able to take the global hydrogen transportation solution to the next level. ◾ HD KSOE will lead the development of the large liquefied hydrogen carrier. The shipbuilder has led Korea’s hydrogen shipping technologies, as it developed the country’s first hybrid engine that uses liquefied natural gas and hydrogen in 2022. ◾ The company also received approval from Det Norske Veritas Group, a Norway-based international accredited registrar and classification society that assesses the condition and seaworthiness of vessels, for the development of a hydrogen cargo system on large liquefied hydrogen carriers in 2023 ◾ Woodside Energy will take charge of developing markets for liquefied hydrogen. Interesting development if you can deal with removing the CO2 related to thermal forming the ammonia and excess created in the process.

Is it possible to convert ammonia to electricity directly? There are a couple of projects pioneering the use of SOFCs for marine applications: (Solid oxide fuel cells with direct ammonia) The Viking Energy: This offshore supply vessel is the world's first to be retrofitted with a 2MW SOFC system from Alma Clean Power. The project is aiming for close to zero emissions by using green ammonia as fuel [1]. Ceres Power and Alma Clean Power Collaboration: These companies are developing a jointly designed SOFC technology specifically for maritime purposes. Their 80kW module is designed to be fueled by various options including LNG, ammonia, and methanol, and is undergoing pilot testing on an Odfjell tanker [2]. These projects are paving the way for a future where SOFCs can play a significant role in reducing emissions from the maritime industry.
