Being a part of an organization is tough. You have to maintain the culture and vibe of the workspace, be on the same page with everyone irrespective of their difference in opinions, and above all, fight tooth and nail against everyone who thinks you are a waste of time, ESPECIALLY when you're making waves, and all eyes are on you, like carrying a bullseye on your back. Hence, no wonder why many organizations crumble before they can even begin. And even if they do survive, there is often very little to salvage from. However, being a Founders' Friday lead at EdVenture Park has taught me that, with the right people and the right mindset, it is still possible to make it all happen. Organizing THE flagship event of EVP every month, launching companies into the market, bringing in quality crowd, changing the conversations, these are some of the few things that are improbable, but not impossible. When you believe in something hard enough, the dots will connect on their own, and you'll find your path in due time. Is it very tough? YESSSS. Will we still make it happen? Since joining the Culture Amp #CultureFirst community in 2021 and being recognized as a winning #culturecreator in #ThoughtLeadership category, I've gained invaluable insights that have profoundly impacted my work at Safe Space. Here are three key takeaways: 1. Voice Empowerment: Ensuring every team member at Safe Space feels heard has led to more inclusive and innovative solutions. I make it a point to ask my people weekly, "Is there anything that stands in the way of you doing your best work?" 2. Psychological Safety: Embedding a culture where risks are encouraged without fear has transformed our approach to failure and learning. >> The principle I apply is simple: We wear the problem-solver hat and aren't afraid to fail. When you fail, you become an #entrepreneur because that's when you dive into problem-solving. Everything is solvable. I've failed many times but also won a couple of times. 3. Empathetic Leadership but no-fluff: Applying relational psychology has helped us understand and meet the emotional needs of our team, enhancing engagement and productivity. >> People rally when they are part of the conversation and decision-making, and you give them the time of day. This is easier in a smaller team and harder to do in larger organizations. These principles have been game-changers in shaping a thriving organizational culture. Embracing the Hard Stuff: Lessons from Alix Mulholland CEO of FieldDay Ireland Last week, I had the pleasure of attending a female networking event hosted by A&L Goodbody LLP, with the incredible Alix Mulholland CEO of Field Day Candles, at my all time fav hotel room2 hometels | B Corp™ I’m personally a huge fan of their Folks Collection—it beautifully captures the essence of gathering and celebrates the heritage of our land. 🌿✨ But what resonated even more was Alix’s refreshing honesty about the real challenges behind the scenes: 🕯️ Candles that didn’t sell. 💼 Packaging ideas that missed the mark. 🤔 Hiring the wrong people, not trusting gut instincts... We often shy away from discussing the hard stuff, but Alix leaned right into it. It’s clear that challenge is not the enemy—it’s the forge where resilience, creativity, and business instincts are sharpened. Smooth rides don’t teach us much. The tough moments? That’s where growth happens. This is so true! I have members tell me all the time that they learn so much from talking through the decisions, opportunities, and challenges other members are working on.
