A study under Tulane's Dr. Parvatiyar has identified the protein TRIM28 as a potential "universal key" in the activation of the body's innate immune response to different types of #viruses. Deletion of TRIM28 impaired antiviral defense response against both RNA and DNA viruses. #TulaneResearch #Medicine Read the paper in the comments! Image: Schematic demonstrating how detection of different classes of virus converges on a pathway mediated by TRIM28. Activation by TRIM28 of another protein called TBK1 is necessary to signal the cell to begin expressing genes involved in immune response.

Most of you got it right! 🎉 It was Paul Ehrlich who hypothesized that side-chain receptors on cells bind to pathogens in a lock-and-key mechanism according to his side-chain theory. He proposed that cells have specific side chains (receptors) on their surfaces that bind to toxins and other antigens, analogous to the chemical side chains in organic compounds. Each cell has multiple side chains, each capable of binding to a specific antigen. Borrowing Emil Fischer's 1894 concept explaining enzyme-substrate interactions, Ehrlich suggested that receptor binding to infectious agents fits like a lock and key. The side-chain theory proposed by Ehrlich in the 19th century is a foundational concept in immunology, marking a significant advancement in understanding how the immune system recognizes and neutralizes foreign substances such as toxins and pathogens. #ScienceAccelerated #Antibodies
