Is your class predictable? Have you ever been to a class where all the pupils bring out their notepads and pens immediately the teacher walks in? They already know how the class is going to be. The teacher explains and fills the board with notes for the pupils to copy. What is the effect of this on learners? I will highlight a few: 📌Creativity is smashed.Students are not given the opportunity to express themselves because the teacher is seen as the custodian of knowledge. 📌Critical thinking skill can never be developed.Students are limited and tested only on what the teacher as taught them.Other forms of teaching methods that could enhance critical thinking skills take the back seat. 📌Lack of students engagement. The students only listen and respond to questions when asked.Students are not given opportunities to take ownership of their learning. 📌Boredom. A predictable class is usually very boring.Students easily lose concentration and interest in learning. 🏫 Teaching what you’ve learned is an incredibly effective study strategy. But there’s an art to teaching properly! When you explain concepts in an “isolated” way, you simply state facts without connecting ideas together. This can hide gaps in understanding. “Simple relational teaching” takes it up a level by explaining how different concepts actually relate and intersect. You strengthen understanding of the overall framework. Connecting concepts takes more learning agility. If your knowledge feels shaky, stick to teaching facts first. Then build up to connections once you’ve refined those chunks of learning. Teaching - whether facts or relationships - pushes you so much further than just reviewing material! So grateful to have participated in a learning session today with Dr. Molly Ness. Much of the reading comprehension instruction happening in classrooms only check for student understanding without building the necessary skills for students to navigate the process needed tocomprehend complex text. Think alouds provide structured opportunities for students to “see” what happens during the metacognitive process of a skilled reader in a clear explicit and systematic way. We should be leveraging the think aloud process across content areas in PreK through 12th grade. This simple yet complex process can reduce unfinished learning and accelerate learning. Remember words of wisdom from the past Occasionally, I go back in time and reflect on my years as a teacher. I began paging through some of my books/notes seeking an answer and I came upon an oldie but goodie that provided me some direction -  Edgar Dale’s Learning Theory: We Remember 10% of what we read 20% of what we hear 30% of what we see 50% of what we hear and see 70% of what we discuss with others 80% of what we experience personally 90% of what we teach others   Here is my take-away from reading Dr. Dale’s words as it relates to learning along with five possible changes, I might need to make in lesson planning and delivery: ·       Make sure not to do too much talking. ·       Provide visuals/examples when I teach a concept. ·       Allow students time to react (or jot down their thinking) as I teach. ·       Set up opportunities for my students to make connections to content in their real world, and give them learning credit when they share their findings with their classmates or me. ·       Challenge learners to teach what they have learned (perhaps to a sibling or a parent) and keep reactions in a log or journal for future sharing. #SFCcommunity #Reflective #Connected #Empowered #BCEschools #BrisbaneCatholicEducation #myamazingschool #teach #challenge #classroom #classroominnovation #classroomideas #teachersoflinkedin #teachingandlearning #teachersfollowteachers #teachertraining   Susie Carmel Anne-Marie Tina Ursula Tracey Katie Kathy Leanne Tracey Eleni Bradley Tina
