It might not be the innovation you thought Pilates needs! But the opinion is solid. Pilates was born in an era where the disease of modern lifestyle was starting to hit. In the intro pages of his book, "Return to Life Through Contrology," he outlines a wellness strategy. It was 1945, he was light years ahead of his time, addressing proper nutrition, movement, sun exposure, and the physiological and mental detoxifying effects of physical exercise. So innovating in Pilates has nothing to do with tech, lights, and more reformers. In this month's issue, we celebrate World Pilates Day and the unifying effect and wellness benefits our method brings. On the front cover, we draw our communities' attention to the importance of size inclusivity with Lindsey Leaf from @fatbodypilates. She shares what more we all could be doing in this space in every studio where we work. This article acts as a call to action for the Pilates industry to prioritise inclusivity, embrace diversity and promote acceptance across all studios to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all types of clients. It’s an important issue that’s silently impacting quite a few Pilates clients and likely potential clients who don’t feel comfortable and so never make it to a studio. We’re doing the Pilates community a disservice, if we don’t acknowledge the issue and address it. We connect many people in the industry at The Pilates Journal and these concerns about inclusivity run deep. As a qualified Pilates professional and past studio owner (2012), it’s amazing to see Pilates celebrated as a new trend, reflecting its long-standing value. It just works! This trend only highlights the need for maintaining the quality of Pilates training, the rise of quick weekend rapid certification courses has the potential to really water down the original method and progression. Pilates isn’t just about the exercises. While the popularity of reformer classes widens Pilates’ appeal, it’s important to remember the original method’s core principles. Many studios make up for this by adding in weights like kettlebells - it deviates from Joseph Pilates’ foundational approach, centered on core strength and precision. Like anything, everyone is free to offer a version or tweak however over time this mix of approaches offers good and bad experiences and potentially puts people of this amazing body strenthening programme. The first things people remark on is how different our Pilates is from the Pilates they have done before. How comfortable the reformer is, the hands-on cues, the small class size, the targeted glute burn from the first rep. Consequently we have nearly doubled the number of Small Group Equipment Pilates classes we offer, with demand soaring for controlled, purposeful and considered modern Pilates. Quality is key. A class size of 20 is A LOT for an instructor to manage so studios and gyms are moving to video screens and cues that are verbal only, with a focus on cardio and burn for the masses. But you miss the position tweaks, the stability focus and ultimately short-change yourself on the ROI. Small Group Equipment classes are by far our most popular with a maximum of 3 per class with individual programming, cueing and progression guaranteed. Managing an injury, training for a marathon, just want a class at your own pace (fast or slow!), then this is the class for you!

My bad back has returned me to Pilates. I tried one class and really didn’t connect with the instructor - they were impersonal, disinterested and it felt like they were going through the motions. But they charged less. The new one charges a fair bit more but is totally engaged in why I’m there, how the class can make a difference and if I’m enjoying it. Which do you think I choose to go back to each week? Even though I don’t really enjoy it! That’s the thing about experiences; they have to mean something to people to make them return. Fear is a powerful feeling that can stop us from doing a lot. It also stops us from experiencing a lot I get that being cautious serve a purpose, it does, especially around Lions or Sharks. But at a Clinical Pilates Studio you needn’t fear any of the following: * Getting “hurt” or “injured” (There’s simply not enough force to damage you if you are listening to the instructions correctly) * Not being able to do the exercises (Your knowledgeable instructor will guide you through exercises for the stage you are at) * Not fitting in (Your studio should be a place that is welcoming & supportive) * Re injuring and injury old or new (Your Clinical Pilates Instructor is equipped to help you work though all sorts of different issues that affect our bodies) * Not being the right “age” (Clinical Pilates is suitable for all ages of people from teens through to older adults) * Being in a room full of Lions or Sharks So don’t let fear stop you from doing something that could give your life a whole lot more than just a couple of hours of exercise per week.
