American needs a preemptive federal data privacy law and we've been working for years to support legislation that enhances protections for consumers while preserving responsible data uses that benefit consumers, nonprofits, government, businesses, and the economy. The proposed American Privacy Rights Act has drawn opposition from a broad range of organizations concerned about its provisions. It's time to abandon this flawed bill and take a new approach that works better for the country. https://lnkd.in/dNWK-GsD https://lnkd.in/dA86VZZ6 https://lnkd.in/dbBvaj-z https://lnkd.in/d5P4xa3M

techUK, alongside a coalition of civil society organisations, academics and think tanks, has co-signed a joint statement expressing grave concerns about the Investigatory Powers (Amendment) Bill. The proposed reforms weaken privacy protections, expand surveillance powers, hinder security innovation, and risk exacerbating international conflicts of law, without sufficient safeguards. These concerns are compounded by the limited opportunity for scrutiny due to the Bill’s rushed passage. Given the scale of these changes, more needs to be done to ensure the updated regime is transparent, proportionate, and contains a robust accountability mechanism, as echoed by the calls for stronger oversight of the Home Office's expanded powers during the Bill debates. In "The Promise and Perils of Tech Whistleblowing," Texas A&M University School of Law Professor Hannah Bloch-Wehba discusses the importance of tech whistleblowers in a world of Big Tech. She finds that protections for whistleblowers are limited and haphazard. Professor Bloch-Wehba proposes that laws should protect both those who report conduct to the government and those who report concerns internally from retaliation. She argues that whistleblowing should be broadened to include ethical and policy concerns. https://lnkd.in/gJFv2SX4

After more than 3 years of review, public consultation and strong advocacy, the long-awaiting Privacy and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2024 (Cth) was introduced on 12 September 2024. While it’s not the sweeping reform some anticipated, it sets the stage for key changes in data security, children’s privacy and stronger regulatory powers – with more reforms to come in later tranches. So what reforms are included in the first tranche, and what do organisations need to do now to be ready? Sophie Bradshaw, David Tulacz and Nicole Stephensen from Ground Up Privacy break it down in our latest article. Check out the quick guide below, or read the full breakdown here: https://lnkd.in/geTSkxSi
