WANT TO SQUASH TEACHER MORALE, PERFORMANCE, AND RETENTION? DO THIS! Let's talk turkey about what happens when schools turn into clock-watching fiestas. Imagine our teachers, those tireless guardians of knowledge, staying late, grading papers while the moon's high in the sky. And yet, the moment they clock in a smidge late, it's as if all their after-hours heroics vanish into thin air. Leadership faux pas? You bet. Here’s the deal from an OBM standpoint: fixating on the tick-tock while ignoring the mountains moved post-clock-out misses the point. Sure, punctuality is important, necessary even in many jobs. But let's not kid ourselves; in the grand schoolyard of life, a little flexibility never hurt anyone, especially in education. By acknowledging the extra miles teachers go (often unasked), we're not just boosting morale; we're reinforcing the very behavior we want to see. It's a classic case of 'catch them doing good.' This isn't rocket science, folks. It's basic human behavior. Make teachers feel seen for their Herculean efforts, and watch as their 'time management' magically aligns. Leadership shouldn't be about nitpicking minutes. It should be about seeing the bigger picture – morale, discretionary effort, investment in our future (yeah, those little rascals we call students). We need to shift the focus from merely counting hours to celebrating achievements. After all, isn't the quality of the teaching magic that happens between the bells what really matters? Look if teachers have been poured into with lots of positive reinforcement, having a tough talk about their time will likely have the intended effect. But when they haven't, they will be negatively impacted, and as a result, their students. After all, if we are going to bring out the best in our students, shouldn't we be focusing on bringing out the best in our teachers. That's what real leadership is about. In short, let's not get bent out of shape over a few minutes here and there. Instead, let's raise our glasses to the educators who give their all, often beyond the call of duty.
