A flying visit to London for an event this evening which should be very interesting. I took the BA flight from Edinburgh, and only 1hr after take off, we were on the runway at London City! Very convenient and effortless at each airport. As we flew down I watched as we passed over vast undeveloped areas of the country and couldn't help but wonder, if we developed only 1% more land outwith our current urban areas, would this resolve our housing crisis? It would take decades to deliver (especially when carried out in parallel to the redevelopment of our cities) but an increase to around 7% of our total UK landmass would provide millions of high quality, energy efficient homes. An end to homelessness and enuinely affordable homes for future generations. Zero carbon properties powered by clean energy. Only through delivery of sufficient housing stock can we tackle issues such as child poverty, crime, health and wellbeing, educational attainment, and so much more. The economic outcome for our society would be almost unimaginable. Housing is the foundation of any civilised society and the first country to resolve its housing situation will become the economic powerhouse of the world.
Trouble is existing infrastructure is completely inadequate for the development being built, certainly here in the south. So much new development where I live has been built with no requirement for new schools, hospitals and the like? Drainage and sewage problems are rife where services have not only failed to be upgraded, but not maintained properly either!
I'm all for those zero carbon homes too. Clean energy is the future, no doubt about it 🙌
This is the same thought I have all the time. It's the desire from the government to get this done that's the problem.
Well said Ed!
Eddie Wighton it's a worldwide problem. You just need everyone behind trying to solve the problem using joined up thinking.
Everytime I fly I think the same thing. There is loads of land!

1wWorth attending Eddie and agree with you on the points you have made. Replace politicians with people who genuinely want to make a difference and have the entrepreneurial spirit to make this vision a reality. instead we have more and more development in places already saturated with housing but without the infrastructure or public transport to support this ill conceived ambition! Edinburgh my home City is a good example of a disaster waiting to happen in planning terms. Already the most congested City in the U.K. and counting. Driving around the City today I was genuinely shocked at the state of the roads and the volume of traffic everywhere I went. Time to explore the New Town concept further and let’s see more housing development in places where they are most needed and at prices that people can afford!
