I always chuckle when someone I've known for a long time asks "What is it that you do again?"...typically with their head cocked to one side. The simple answer: "I help brands grow/optimize their brick-and-mortar portfolio". Sometimes that's enough. Sometimes I expand: "I help brands find places to build new locations, negotiate the deals, and then monitor the project until it's open to the public." I've been doing this same thing since...wait for it...1994. I've done it for some huge brands (I'm looking at you, Starbucks) and some smaller brands (hey Protein Bar & Kitchen, I miss you). Today, I got to shop at Costco. Since we moved last summer, the closest store is 45min away. We reluctantly joined Sam’s trying to tell ourselves it was “the same” but after a few visits, we realized it was not. I found that the comparison of these stores align with my job searching efforts & some of my work experience with different companies. On the outside, they seem similar. They provide the same services. Only when you peel back the curtain and start to look around, you realize that the quality is drastically different, how the employees are treated are drastically different & the overall experience is drastically different. As job seekers (& shoppers), we can be picky. Do yourself a service, save yourself some heartache & find your Costco! The job market in retail is interesting right now. Some observations from myself and my peers: - Specific experience is desired for category/product management roles. I.E I’m definitely viewed as a hard goods, “sports” buyer. - Senior category management roles (Above category management, below Merch dept. management) are few and far between. - Salaries are all over the show - Some companies simply want to fill roles and will pay the market minimum, some will pay for the “right” candidate. - Interview processes are dragged out and in some cases, roles axed as results are still poor. Anyway, here’s a picture of me in Marseille, France. Absolutely loving the fashion retail experience through Europe, particularly Barcelona and Milan.

I haven’t posted recently about my day job, so here’s an update!! Yesterday we officially opened the 3rd brick and mortar location! Crazy right? In ONE year we have opened three completely new stores starting from less than nothing to be fully built, stocked, merchandised, staffed, and operating. This experience has been somewhat of a challenge, yet in my opinion has also been a fairly easy achievement. And no, it hasn’t been easy in the sense that it’s easy work or a simple feat to undertake. You see, it’s all about how you approach things. If you approach things with the confidence that you can accomplish any task necessary, you and your staff will not only be more effective at doing so, but it will be more fulfilling as well.
