A day in the life of Retail. When I was in corporate and had a job interview, I always got the same question about my resume: “You managed Eddiebauer stores? What was that like?” People are fascinated if you have management experience at a storied and cherished brand. Working at Brooks Brothers as an Assistant Store Manager is no different. Actually, running a store is a lot like running a business. Because it IS a business that someone has entrusted to you to run. Retail is a great training/proving ground for building a knowledge and experience base in sales, project management, relationship building, hiring, human resources, merchandising, inventory control…the list is endless. What I love best about running a store, is the opportunity to leave my footprint on a business with my creativity and sales performance. Last week I was the top seller in our location and I’m one of a group of formidable sales people. Check back here for fun retail stories and sales hacks! #retailtherapy #retailsales #salesexperience

So with Walmart opening up jobs for people without the college experience why don’t they open up a type of open interview for just associates to see their knowledge and if they ‘vibe’ with their team instead of bringing people in who know nothing about the position 🤷🏼♀️ There are so many DC workers that are trying to get to home office to better their career but they can’t even get an interview with home office at all. Instead they bring in people from other places and they try to change things before getting to know how everything works. Why not try and hire from down below where these workers actually know what it takes to run a DC?

I often get asked, where do I find open positions at Walmart? Here are a couple of links, 1. Here on LinkedIn under the Jobs subheading -https://lnkd.in/gfNqcVpS 2. On our main recruiting site, https:// careers.walmart.com NOTE: I am not a hiring manager or a recruiter. I do not have direct input into most jobs , there for if I don’t personally know you and your work qualifications, I will not provide you a recommendation. I will offer to review your Resume/CV after you apply if you will furnish the position number (starts with R- and then a series of numbers). Please be your own advocate and apply first, I would hate for you to not be considered for a position because I get to your request until after the position is closed. Please remember I am doing this on my own time and I am providing you with my synopsis of your qualifications based on my tenure with the company. If you are looking for a recommendation, I am not your guy.

Networking is crucial in every area. But as someone who has done retail for 20 years it’s so important to network and always keep your ear to the ground.
As a Store Manager, I used to use the excuse "I don't have enough time" when speaking about networking ALL THE TIME. I'm here to tell you, it is one of the MOST important tasks on your to-do list. Let's pretend your ASM quits, gives you two weeks notice and only then do you start your search. You'll probably search for a new one over the next 2-4 weeks. Then once you make an offer, they will give their 2 weeks at their current employer. Then they'll need to train with you. That's an average of 6 weeks without a trained ASM. And that's IF you find someone within the first 2 weeks. But what if you knew everyone in your mall already? What if you check-in regularly with some leaders in other retailers who are looking for a change? What if you had a running list of leaders who had done a first interview with you already, even though you didn't have an open role at that time? Are you willing to start from scratch every single time you need to fill an open role?

Since #rue21 began its liquidation, I started looking for other jobs. Most positions I applied for required interviews with the recruiter, the District Manager (DM), and the Regional Manager (RM). Talking to the recruiter was a waste of time; they only set up interviews and then disappeared, without any decision-making power in the hiring process. But it’s a job. Many companies require at least two interviews for hiring. If the RM doesn't trust the DM to make the right decisions, why have a DM in that position? Similarly, if the DM doesn't trust the Store Manager (SM) to hire their assistant managers, why is that SM managing the store? Why is a second opinion necessary to decide if a candidate is suitable for the job? Great managers don't need to be micromanaged. They understand the consequences of poor hiring decisions and act accordingly.
