Drawings✏️reveal a certain design intelligence. While there are many drawing types, the Lima-based architecture practice Barclay & Crousse has a particular affinity for sections. Sections show a building’s spatial structure, seen when the building is cut vertically along an axis, usually perpendicular to the horizontal plane. When used strategically, they can communicate the experience of the architecture – the interplay of solids and voids, connections between spaces, the relationship between the building and its surroundings, etc. Sandra Barclay, co-founder of Barclay & Crousse, explains more in this video. (Disclaimer: Parts of the video are blurry due to unforeseen technical issues) … What do you think? Let us know in the comments below 👇 … Watch the complete episode on YouTube or listen to the conversation on Spotify or Apple Podcasts. How can we prevent the compartmentalisation of the design process? In this video, Jonathan Diamond of Well Grounded Real Estate shares how he and his team managed to avert this issue while designing 1925 Victoria Park Ave (Gold winner at Holcim Awards 2023). The key was to bring various teams involved in the project to the same table at the very beginning, and establish shared goals. This way, any and every decision could get “filtered through the lens” of the common outcomes, thus reducing divergence between multiple stakeholders. ………………………………………………. This conversation is an extract from episode one of the newly launched Ecogradia special series in collaboration with the Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction. Timber is gaining traction as a sustainable construction material across building types and scales. A few years back, this would have been considered impossible. This change in attitude is the result of a larger shift in our grasp of sustainability and its importance. We now understand and see things more clearly, which is helping architects and developers make better choices. This is also Bjarke Ingels’ hope with BIG’s Plan for the Planet. It can help built environment professionals and decision-makers recognise their projects’ impact at the planetary scale, and work towards global well-being. …......…............................................................. The episode, “BIG has a plan for the planet: can it be done? __ Bjarke Ingels," is OUT NOW on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts 🔗: https://lnkd.in/g-sfKdic Thank you to Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction for supporting season 4 of Ecogradia. …......…............................................................. I recently had a great chat with Hugh McEwen from Office S&M Architects on our podcast. We dove into whether it's a smooth sail convincing clients to adopt sustainability practices in their renovations or self-build projects. Hugh says "You have to do [an] education process with clients. From a financial aspect, it's looking at what are the longer term costs and longer term benefits of having a comfortable and healthy home. And then also in terms of material, what are the benefits of having things that aren't unnatural or regenerative materials that can achieve better breathability or air quality.” Check out this episode and plenty more in my 'Architects of Ambition' podcast series. We're shining a light on how small architectural firms across the UK are revolutionising residential architecture. They're not just creating houses; they're at the forefront of innovation, sustainability, and making spaces uniquely personal.
