There is lack of participation in women in surf, therefore there is no role models and also the other thing is that traditionally Sri Lanka that we have gender roles. Hi, I'm Kalpa Gandhari, a director of Sea Sisters. It's an organization where we teach Sri Lankan girls and women how to swim and surf. By doing these, we teach them a new skills and also challenge gender stereotypes in Sri Lanka. Sisters is a nonprofit where we teach Sri Lankan girls and women how to swim and serve because thousands of reasons Sri Lanka women don't engage with these water spots. Sri Lanka is a famous surf tourist destination among surf tourists. So there are lots of tourist comes to Sri Lanka each year just for surfing. And at the moment the surf tourism is a sub category in tourism industry. And this industry is a male dominated at the moment because there is no much remain in this industry. Our women participation is very less. So in that case there are lots of economical opportunities and also the social benefits. That's why we think it's important to teach someone self one thing is that they get this experience that they never had in their life because some people they never beat or pool. And they never got this chance in their life. And also through that they, they started to see that they can learn something new and they can do different things in their life. And that's actually inspired them to do different things. And so we believe that we can empower using these swimming and surfing as a tool. There is lack of participation in women in surf. Therefore there is no role models and they're only like. Few female surfers and also the other thing is that traditionally Sri Lanka that we have gender roles and like normally when it comes to these villages, women normally do their like task like looking after kids and then looking after elderly parents and like these kind of things. And there's no time for them for recreational activities like to go for surfing or to do other things because that's not in their priority because. They have to life to live and the responsibilities. Back then I was doing my studies and I saw that sisters, they were looking for a translator and although I didn't know how to swim and I also I had like big curious about surfing. So that's why I joined there as a translator and then started to learn swimming and surfing.
