"Do you live in a dumbbell community?   Many communities have a large supply of low-income or subsidized housing and a large supply of high-end housing - and not much in between. These are known as dumbbell communities. In these communities, there is a shortage of housing for middle-income households: Alabama households earning between $36,000 and $72,000. For comparison, the starting salary for first-year teachers in Alabama is $43,358, and the median salary for all teachers is $57,930." The top workforce sectors for Native Americans in Texas are in education, health, and social assistance, mirroring the state’s top sectors; yet they have a higher presence in the arts, entertainment, recreation, accommodation, and food service industries compared to Texans’ share.

Every student deserves the chance to pursue their academic goals or gain 21st century fast track career paths without worrying about the burden of finishing school with debt, especially those from disproportionately impacted communities. Providing equitable access to financial aid is crucial in reducing student debt and ensuring a leveled playing field for all education career paths.
