Exciting News. Did you know that farmers grow 95% of their food in the uppermost layer of soil, called "Topsoil"? Yet this Topsoil is globally endangered. In the last 150 years, nearly half of the most productive part of the soil has disappeared due to unsustainable farm practices. How do we produce food without healthy soil? At Wandusoa, we are tackling this issue head-on. We are a team of dedicated regenerative farmers working with youths on the margins of society by equipping them with adequate knowledge and skills in regenerative agriculture so that they become stewards of our planet. Monday, I kicked off what will be a 2.5-week spin around Brazil to check out reforestation projects in Rhondonia, Rio Branco, and Ribeira Valley (I'll also go to Macapa to visit emerging, indigenous-led cooperatives selling Amazonian products). I've learned so much already about how smallholder farmers are critical to the reforestation movement and about the inherent economic incentives for this segment to lead the charge, when they turn away from monocropping and turn towards agroforestry. Bananas, nuts, acai, coffee, cacao: these are part of the winning solution to empower farmers to become proactive carbon sequester-ers! The Songhaï Farm: An agroecological model that works through an integrated agricultural system🌾🐓🐟 Godfrey Nzamujo, the founder of Songhaï Farm in Porto Novo, Benin, based his model on the synergies between crop production, animal husbandry, and fish farming. Waste from one section becomes a raw material in another in the form of bioenergy. Nothing is lost, everything is transformed! This recycling allows for autonomy and efficiency, forming the foundation of sustainability. 👍 At Songhaï, everything is produced, processed, and marketed on-site, keeping wealth within the community. Leaders from CORPAPA, a farmers’ association in Ayacucho, Peru, recently visited CIP headquarters in Lima to explore collaboration opportunities. Key topics discussed included: ✅ access to Andean roots and tubers germplasm (olluco, mashua, oca) ✅ improved potato and sweetpotato varieties ✅ the characterization of potato landraces. Exciting possibilities ahead for enhancing agricultural 🌱 practices and biodiversity in the region!

A Visit to My Uncle’s Farm: A Glimpse of Sustainability in Action During my recent visit to Arabsiyo, Somaliland, I had the chance to experience something truly special—my uncle’s farm. This wasn’t just any farm; it was a thriving example of what sustainable agriculture can look like in our region. Walking through the fields, I was amazed by the variety of crops growing under the sun—papayas, watermelons, limes, onions, tomatoes, and so much more. Seeing this abundance of fresh produce, I couldn’t resist trying my hand at picking my own papaya (with varying degrees of success 😅😅). What stood out even more was the solar panel system my uncle had installed, powering the farm’s operations. This commitment to sustainability, even at the grassroots level, resonated deeply with me. It’s a reminder of the importance of sustainable practices in everything we do, whether it’s agriculture, business, or community development. At the Beeyo Maal Cooperative, we focus on ethical sourcing and sustainability, it’s inspiring to see these values reflected in my own family’s work. It reinforces my belief that with the right mindset and practices, we can make a real difference. This visit was a beautiful reminder of the potential we have within our own communities to lead by example and contribute to a more sustainable future. Within the RADIANT EU project we aim to identify potential windows of opportunities which can boost the usage of underutilised crops. Underutilised crops are neglected and forgotten plant varieties and species which are undervalued by the current agricultural and socio-economic system, but which hold great nutritional and ecological value. Underutilised crops, therefore, could have a great role to shift toward more ecologically resilient and socially just food system. We have a collected a couple of policy case studies which serve as good practices to support produced and/or consumed diversity.
