I agree it’s important for those with food allergies to ensure they are taking responsibility and checking ingredients lists and allergen information carefully. My personal experience is that they do this already anyway - every single meal, every single snack, every single day. When someone suffers from a life threatening food allergy they don’t just forget about it and stop reading labels because it’s a bank holiday weekend - they are always living cautiously and carefully. I believe that more importantly the Food Standards Agency should be campaigning for the food industry to ensure that the information on the label matches the ingredients inside the packet. This is a basic expectation from consumers. Too many mistakes have been made and too many lives negatively impacted or lost due to incorrect/ incomplete food labelling. It’s time for the food industry to step up and take responsibility for THEIR end of the contract with consumers (including allergy sufferers). It’s not acceptable that lives are being lost in 2024 due to negligence/ recklessness/ carelessness. #allergyawareness #corporateresponsibility #foodsafety
As we hop into Easter festivities, it's crucial to remember that safety comes first, especially when it comes to allergens in our favourite Easter goodies. From hot cross buns to Easter eggs, it’s important to stay informed. Food businesses are required by law to inform customers if any of the food they provide contains any of the 14 listed allergens as an ingredient. These allergens include celery, cereals containing gluten (such as wheat, barley, and oats), crustaceans, eggs, fish, lupin, milk, molluscs, mustard, peanuts, sesame, soybeans, sulphur dioxide and sulphites (at concentrations more than ten parts per million), and tree nuts. When indulging in Easter treats, always check for allergen information which should be provided by food businesses like cafe's or resturants in writing. This could be on a menu, chalkboard, in an information pack or confirmed verbally. Alternatively, a written notice may be placed in a clearly visible position explaining how to obtain this information. Let’s make this Easter a happy, inclusive, and safe celebration for everyone.
