That the establishment values something attacking society, which is a neutral entity, is telling. This work is dull, predictable, formulaic and far from radical. It's fashionable to assume society corrupts, by definition, and should be destabilised and replaced by moralising prescription The woes this work refers to may well exist, but the implication that society is to blame and must be replaced (a la Rousseau) is dangerous, arrogant and destructive. Society is neutral. It accommodates the worst and the best and is capable of respecting disagreement and contradiction. This is essential for compromise and voluntary cooperation, even when individuals disagree Today's establishment, tired of democracy, compromise and uncertainty, promotes this inarticulate attempt at philosophy. It undermines society with the intention to back ideological prescription intolerant of disagreement, compromise or voluntary cooperation. There's a scent of authoritarianism It's anti-democratic to attack society to try to replace it, and a sign of establishment contempt for normal people. Elevation of such preachy, dull, predictable, mundane Antisocial Art is promoted by those who think they know what's good for us. They are the problem, not the artist

The 60cm by 120cm artwork was a retro-looking photograph of a family of four, with the background and parts of the faces and bodies roughly painted over in white. It was unassuming compared with the video- and photo-based artworks in the adjacent rooms, but only on closer inspection might visitors have wondered why there was no label giving the artist or the work’s title. The real reason only became public last week: the nameless painting, the content of which has not been previously made public, was not the work of a modern master selected by the curators, but the creation of a 51-year-old technical worker employed by the museum, who had sneaked it into the show in the early hours of the morning. The Pinakothek, which has one of Europe’s largest collections of modern and contemporary art, removed the painting after closing time, sacked the technician and kept quiet about the incident." "But museum insiders say that far from being a brazen shot at fame, the artwork was meant as a critical intervention by one of the people who help make exhibitions happen but usually remain invisible, designed to provoke debate about elitism in the art world. Early reports failed to mention that the special exhibition in which the picture was hung was all about errors and malfunctions in art, and called Glitch: On the Art of Interference. Its aim, according to the catalogue, was to “uncover normative orders and sociopolitical disparities” and “make visible what is invisible”. “The motive behind smuggling that picture into the exhibition was to see if the directors of the museum were prepared to practise what they preach”, said one person familiar with the events. “It was an artistic challenge. The technician who hung up the picture wasn’t lusting for fame.”" Rather at odds with the concept of the exhibition itself, spoilt sports curators in this case taking extreme measures indeed. If the artist has only created a limited number of artworks and is known for working in a distinct genre and style, then most likely, each of his individual artwork will be expensive, sought after and will likely increase in value over time. For a less prolific artist, the condition of the artwork will not necessarily affect the desirability of the work. However, for artists who are prolific, the condition of the artwork will be a major factor, as there will be a likelihood of more investors or collectors with works in excellent condition from the artist. Rarity can also be established by perusing through an artist's oeuvre or catalogue raisonné and closely examining each work in order to single out the elements that make the piece you are interested in acquiring unique. The provenance of the work also adds to its rarity. Provenance refers to the ownership history of the artwork. In other words, who owned the work before? Which prestigious museum, public or private collection did the painting or sculpture belong in? It therefore implies that if you are purchasing a contemporary artwork on the primary market, or from a local gallery or directly from the artist, it might not have any notable ownership history. Provenance may have a distinct influence on the current and future value of a work of art. A mediocre painting once owned by a famous person or respected art collector might be offered on the market at an astronomical price due to the work’s “distinguished provenance.” However, over time, the sustainability of that inflated price is not guaranteed. On the other hand, a contemporary artwork that once belonged to a prestigious public collection or a revered private collector will likely maintain and increase its value over time. Next year, the 21st century will round off its first quarter, and on this occasion I curated the most comprehensive exhibition of non-male Greenlandic contemporary art of the 21st century. The exhibition BACKBONE asks why women's art is so underrepresented, even though women are the backbone of our society. The exhibition presents work from the last 24 years by 26 contemporary female artists and consists of a dialog between two art collections supplemented by several loaned works. The great diversity presented in this exhibition in terms of materials and techniques (painting, paper, glass, video, installation, textile, digital art, grafik, watercolor) as well as topics, forbids categorization, as this would curtail the complexity of many works. If we were to categorize the works thematically, we would not be able to uncover the multiplicity of layers. A portrait can depict a person's contentment, their psychological turmoil or their emotional depth. At the same time, it can turn into a political statement, when it reflects on the person`s colonial history. Then, even a flag can become a portrait. However, it would also be simplistic to see some of the works as a political indictment. The complexity of Greenland's history requires several raised index fingers. The search for and determination of identity is one of many artistic driving forces that extend the process from nature-focused works to forms of expression that capture the zeitgeist. Man's relationship to nature, however, goes far beyond capturing and reproducing; it also implies questions of responsibility and thus participates in environmental discussions. It is an exhibition without dog sledding, sunsets and northern lights. It presents an image of Greenland that has emerged from within. At the same time, this exhibition offers an alternative answer to the question of what Greenlandic art is by showcasing Greenlandic artists who do not necessarily make Greenlandic art, yet the art is Greenlandic. Alongside well-known artists such as Jessie Kleemann, Aka Høegh, Buuti Pedersen and Julie Edel Hardenberg, the exhibition also presents work by promising young artists working between Qaqortoq and Qaanaaq. After years of creative experimentation, he successfully combines traditional oil painting media with the luminous media of the post-industrial era in this unique form of artistic expression. Zhai (born 1987) graduated from Sichuan Fine Art Academy Oil Painting department. The accumulation of layers of oil paint is a technique the artist has consistently employed in his work. This intricate method, while shaping the depth and three-dimensionality of the artwork, simultaneously introduces a brief sense of defocus through continuous repetition and accumulation. The artwork expresses human desires for both material and emotion, alternating between vivid, dazzling beauty and soft, subtle, and profound black-and-white grayscale tones, all of which make us feel the complexity of industrialized urban life. His works also serve as profound metaphors for industrial society and modern cities, where industrial civilization brings wealth and innovation but also accompanies the endless expansion of human desires. The use of illuminated panel serves as a continuation of the narrative between day and night. Shanghai, the city where he resides, is known as the “City That Never Sleeps,” its nights and dreams seemingly embellished by lights. The illuminated panel provides a backlight effect, rendering the canvas semi-transparent and granting the artist new methods of color control and the creation of diverse light and shadow changes. Technically, this method is a reverse form compared to canvas surface creation. Nahmad Contemporary and Perrotin will present TAKASHI MURAKAMI, a collaborative exhibition at #Tarmak22 in #Gstaad on view from February 14 through March 12, 2024. Featuring nine large-scale sculptures, the presentation will illuminate two paramount subjects in the Japanese artist’s oeuvre: Mr. DOB and Miss Ko². Conceived in the nineties during the incipient years of the artist’s career, these two iconic characters form the lifeblood of Murakami’s visual language and have continued to evolve in various forms and mediums over the past three decades. On view in the exhibition are seven sculptural iterations of the legendary Mr. DOB that Murakami (b. 1962, Tokyo) created between 2019-2022 and two life-sized figurines of Miss Ko² that he made from 2004-2023. The meticulous, yet sleek industrial production of these sculptures mark Murakami’s commitment to scrupulous execution and advancing modes of creation, as well as his long-standing interest in blurring the distinction between high and low materials. Takashi Murakami marks the third collaboration between Nahmad Contemporary and Perrotin, following Hans Hartung in New York, 2018 and Georges Mathieu in New York, 2021. On the occasion of the exhibition, Matthieu Jacquet composed a text on the iconic status of Mr. DOB and Michelle Molokotos presented an overview of the evolution of Miss Ko². ICON By Matthieu Jacquet “Icon.” Today, this ancient term is so ubiquitous that its meaning has become quite vague. Does it refer to a sacred religious image, a fashion icon, a music star, or a revered role model? With so many possible definitions, what makes someone or something an icon in the 21st century? How can an image stand out amidst the constant barrage of visual stimuli to earn this prestigious label? Several characteristics can be identified. Firstly, it must be striking, original, and memorable enough to immediately arouse attraction and even fascination in those who encounter it. The image must be legible and effective, as much signifier as signified, bringing form and content into perfect harmony. Its popularity and visibility must have become part of our collective memory and unconscious, making it instantly recognizable and familiar. To be fully effective, however, an icon must also embody an idea, a belief, a style, a movement, or a work and become so archetypal that just a few words invoke it in everyone’s mind.

Today’s Art Question #3 of 52 What are the current art trends I should be aware of? This is a question I’ve ask myself many times. In addition, I’ve asked myself if I should follow the trend, in my own way of course.  But, the ever-evolving world of fine art shifts like the sands of a surrealistic desert, and artists must navigate the landscape with the cunning of a fox. And that, my fellow artists can be a confusing mess! So let’s take a closer look at this perplexing issue. In the realm of contemporary art, one cannot escape the influence of technology. Digital art, with its pixelated wonders and virtual realities, has taken the art world by storm. Artists are blending traditional techniques with digital wizardry, creating mind-bending creations that challenge our perception of reality. It's like stepping into a painting by Dali, only to find yourself in the world of Tron! But fear not, traditionalists, for the old masters still hold sway in the hallowed halls of art. Classic techniques such as oil painting and sculpture are making a comeback, with artists putting a modern twist on age-old traditions. It's like Michelangelo meets Banksy, with a sprinkle of avant-garde madness thrown in for good measure! As for regional differences, the art world is a kaleidoscope of cultures and influences. In Europe, there's a resurgence of interest in classical art forms, with a focus on craftsmanship and skill. In Asia, contemporary art is flourishing, blending traditional motifs with modern sensibilities. And in the Americas, there's a celebration of diversity, with artists drawing inspiration from a melting pot of cultures and experiences. So, how should an artist incorporate these trends into their work? Well, my fellow artist, the key is to stay true to yourself while embracing the spirit of the times. Incorporate technology into your creations, but don't lose sight of the human touch. Experiment with different techniques and styles, but always stay true to your artistic vision. And above all, remember that trends come and go, but true artistry is timeless. As for whether it's important to follow trends, well, that's a question as old as art itself. Some say yes, for it keeps you relevant and in touch with the zeitgeist. Others say no, for true artists blaze their own trails, unconstrained by the whims of fashion. Personally, I say a bit of both. Follow the trends, but don't let them dictate your art. Be a trendsetter, not a trend follower. March 1 - 9, 2024 - THIS Gallery is excited to present a new solo exhibition by Vancouver painter, Cara Bain. The exhibition asks, "What do we hold, carry, push through, and receive during the act of making something new?" In this series, paintings of the human figure at rest are surrounded by bedding. While giving us needed comfort, protection, and escape from our daily lives, these surroundings act as soft walls—barriers that protect us from the outside world but also separate us from it. Perhaps at a cost. The cloth in this series is an active second character in each piece—it encases, envelopes, and protects these figures from the outside world. Teal textures intermingled with the copper leaf are created in these pieces by applying chemicals that produce various coloured patina effects. The smooth portions of uncorroded metal accentuate a pure and uncomplicated ideal of what falling asleep means. In actuality, it is a much more complex and mysterious process of letting go, often disrupted by invasive thoughts. In immediate contrast to the soft, comforting protection of cloth, are works painted on found tools. A saw, for instance. A constructive tool of creation, but also a jagged, forceful object, full of friction. A passive hand gently lifts a slack thread – stored potential energy waiting to be unleashed. Can it incorporate friction to build something new, or will it remain in a state of rest? The contrasting materials used in this body of work illustrate the complex dynamics of being vulnerable. As an artist, one exposes the deepest parts of oneself relentlessly and repeatedly to criticism and judgment. This work is a testament to artists’ stubborn will to—work, retreat, repeat. There will be an opening reception on Saturday, March 2 from noon to 4 pm. The artist will be in attendance.

Even though it is largely dependent on the gallery you acquired the piece from, a reputable gallery that is professional, passionate and serious about the artist they represent will include the following documents with the artwork; a: Provenance report b: Condition of artwork report c: Any other news related to the artist d: Original invoice with the gallery’s logo e: Previous and future press clippings about the artist f: Previous and future auction results of the artist’s work g: Previous and future press releases of the artist’s exhibitions h: Previous and future catalogue(s) of the artist’s work signed by the artist i: Detailed biography and bibliography of the artist, especially printed for the collector j: Original certificate of authenticity with the artist’s signature i.e. if he or she is still alive k: Previous and future brochures, pamphlets, and other promotional material of the artist’s work In the case that the artist whose work the gallery sold has moved on and is now represented by a different gallery, a reputable gallery will still ensure that the collector is furnished with all the above information. It is important to make sure that all the above documents are kept in a safe place. Furthermore, any other correspondence that might have taken place between you and the artist, e.g. a photograph with him, a signed letter, an autographed book etc... should all be kept safely together with the other documents.
