As we approach the International Women Board of Directors summit, it's inspiring to reflect on the strides made towards gender parity in the corporate world, particularly in the Middle East. The UAE stands as a beacon of progress, with initiatives like the 'Women on Boards' directive making it mandatory for corporations and government entities to include women on their boards. This bold step has significantly shifted the representation metrics, with the aim of reaching 20% female representation on boards. But this is not enough and we will only rest when we can be equally represented. Globally, the representation of women on boards is on an upward trend, with a global average of 19.7% of board seats held by women. Yet, the presence of women in top executive roles like #CEOs and board chairs lags behind. This disparity underscores the need for continued advocacy and action to not only place women in boardrooms but also empower them in leadership positions. The correlation between gender-diverse boards and more efficient, careful decision-making is clear. It underscores the importance of a diverse composition for effective corporate governance. However, achieving this diversity extends beyond mere representation; it requires a cultural shift, supportive nomination processes, and the dismantling of barriers to women's participation.
