Can Heritage Day be an additional driver for inclusive workplaces? This morning, I decided to wear a Xhosa outfit to the office for our  'Heritage Day' celebrations Blue Label Telecoms. My son couldn't resist teasing me, questioning why I chose a different culture when we are Tswana. We shared a laugh over it, but it got me thinking. I explained to him that I am proudly South African and value the rich, diverse cultures we have. What struck me as I entered the office was the sight of my colleagues, each dressed in their unique cultural and traditional attires. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement as we exchanged stories, shared laughter, and captured the vibrant beauty of our various cultures in photos. This experience prompted a deeper reflection: How can we infuse the open-mindedness and enthusiasm of Heritage Day celebrations into creating greater inclusivity, acceptance, and diversity within our organisations as we charter the People Agenda course? How can this celebration become a catalyst for enhancing people engagement experiences in the workplace? Some points to ponder on… See Cultural Inclusivity as a Strength: Let's initiate campaigns and engagements that draw on cultural diversity as a source of strength within our organisations. Promote Open-Mindedness: Use Heritage Day as a catalyst to encourage open-mindedness and curiosity about different cultures through cultural awareness initiatives, workshops, and guest speakers. Equitable Policies: Review our company policies to ensure they align with the values of inclusivity and diversity, including fair practices in recruitment, promotions, and decision-making. Safe Cultural Expression: Create a workplace environment where every employee feels safe expressing their cultural identity. Encourage open conversations and provide resources for cross-cultural learning. Leadership Engagement: Encourage our leaders to participate actively by dressing up and joining in the festivities, setting an example for all employees. May your year be filled with dragonboat-loads of happiness. Lunar New Year is nearing and more Asian Americans are taking time off to celebrate even though it’s not a company holiday. Because it's not a nationally recognized holiday, Asian Americans are figuring out ways to balance their professional commitments and celebrating culture. Lunar New Year celebrations are in full swing, marked by vibrant parades, delicious feasts, and precious reunions with loved ones. But this year, something different is brewing – more Asian Americans are asserting their right to celebrate, even if it means taking time off without official company holiday status. For many, Lunar New Year is the most important cultural celebration of the year. It's a time for honoring ancestors, welcoming new beginnings, and strengthening family bonds. Yet, traditionally, the professional world hasn't recognized this significance. This can leave Asian Americans feeling torn between celebrating their heritage and fulfilling work obligations. But that is changing due in part to greater cultural awareness and DEI initiatives. Increased visibility of Asian cultures and growing understanding of the holiday's importance are empowering individuals to prioritize their heritage. And more companies are embracing DEI efforts, creating a more inclusive environment where employees feel comfortable requesting time off for cultural observances. Lack of official recognition can create hurdles for those wishing to fully observe the holiday. 🎙️ I've just finished two webinars on unconscious bias, and its impact on inclusive practices. Thanks to the couple of hundred employees attending. I appreciate that I can do what I love - sharing experiences, having a conversation and spreading the light of #DEI. ✨ May is slowing coming to an end, but putting diversity, equity & inclusion in the spotlight should be practiced throughout the whole year. However, those past few weeks were a perfect time to reflect on our efforts towards truly inclusive workplaces. Summarizing #EuropeanDiversityMonth at KRUK Group, I have 3 simple words to share: celebration, conversation, connection. #CELEBRATION 🎉 May is all about seeing the value and appreciating our diversity, but also appreciating the steps we already took and drawing conclusions. For example, being on #DiversityINCheck list as one of the best employers is a perfect way to celebrate, but to also learn and continuously improve. #CONVERSATION 💬🗨️ Webinars, posts and communication from leaders are great tools to build knowledge and make a statement to everyone that #DEI matters. But done in the right way, it invites everyone to actually talk about it - their needs, doubts and questions. It doesn't have to be a formal way. Those conversations that matter can happen during small, everyday interactions. #CONNECTION 🤝 As an international Group, operating in several countries, we need to appreciate our unique cultures and common values at the same time.
