🔍 How has natural gas shaped Europe's energy landscape? This morning I had the pleasure of giving MEP Assistants in the European Parliament an introduction to natural gas in Europe. From coal gas streetlights in 1812 to today's massive LNG imports, Europe's relationship with natural gas has evolved quite a bit, to say the least. Key milestones: 19th Century: 🔸 1812: First use of coal gas in London for street lighting 🔸 1840s: Gas lighting spreads across Europe Post-WWII Boom: 🔸 1945-1960: Gas demand surges with residential heating 🔸 Major gas fields discovered in the Netherlands (Groningen) and France (in Lacq, near my hometown!) Growth & Integration: 🔸 1970s-1990s: Pipelines bring gas from Soviet fields to Western Europe Modern Era: 🔸 2021: Russian gas accounts for 45% of European imports 🔸 2022-2023: LNG accounts for 45% of EU gas imports So many things have changed over these two centuries. Yet one thing remains the same: the versatility of Gas, which is still today Europe’s 2nd energy source. I’m grateful to the European Energy Forum for the opportunity Pascale Verheust Alessia Pasqua and Camilla Montemurro) and to our industry friends for their contributions to this great briefing GRTgaz Eurogas Snam S.p.A. Germany’s Federal Network Agency has approved transmission system operators’ (TSOs) applications to build the country’s 9,000km hydrogen core network (HCN), allowing for construction to begin. Set to cover Germany by 2032, the approved network comprises 9,040km of pipelines; 60% of which will be converted natural gas lines, requiring an estimated €18.9bn ($20.4bn) of investment. Planned to connect production centres, import areas, storage facilities and end-users, by 2032, the network’s feed-in capacity will be 101GW of hydrogen, with a feed-out capacity of 87GW. “With the approved core network, we are creating security for everyone involved – from hydrogen producers at home and abroad to the operators of power plants and storage facilities and future industrial users,” said Economic Affairs and Climate Protection Minister, Robert Habeck. https://lnkd.in/eahFyhcq

🇩🇪🇳🇱🇧🇪🇳🇴🇵🇱🇨🇿🇦🇹🇫🇷🇪🇺In Germany, the consultation period for the draft of the hydrogen network that was submitted to the Bundesnetzagentur closed earlier this month. HTNOs (Hydrogen Transmission Network Operator) are now expected to submit the final joint application in Q1 2024. Prior to this the amendment to the German electricity and gas supply Law (Energiewirtschaftsgesetz) on the hydrogen network will come into force. The final submission will be consulted, reviewed and approved by the Bundesnetzagentur. The map below shows the Wasserstoff-Kernnetz or the core hydrogen network. It will be gradually built up until 2032, starting with the first pipeline conversion in 2025. The hydrogen core network is intended to reach well-known large hydrogen consumption and production regions in Germany and thus connect central hydrogen locations, such as large industrial centers, storage facilities, power plants and import corridors. The core network will include important hydrogen infrastructure that is scheduled to be operational by 2032. - The hydrogen core network with a total length of around 9,700 km, covering all federal states. - ~60% of the network will consist of repurposed natural gas pipelines, the remainder will be new pipelines. - Investments costs of €19.8 billion will be mostly socialised through network fees - There will be four border crossing points with the Netherlands: Vlieghus, Oude Statenzijl/Bunde, Elten and Vreden, and there will be additional points in Norway (North Sea offshore connection via AquaDuctus), Belgium, France, Austria, the Czech Republic and Poland. https://lnkd.in/e_HD_-4J [Map via FNB Gas e.V.] #hydrogen #waterstof #wasserstoff #hydrogène #idrogeno #energy

27 September 2024 FEnEx CRC Monthly Colloquium: "Options for LNG plant decarbonisation" presented by Dr Luke McElroy and Dr Mauricio Di Lorenzo. About the topic: Reforms to the Australian Government's Safeguard Mechanism legislation in 2023 introduced the concept of declining baselines. Under the Safeguard Mechanism, Australia's large industrial facilities are required to keep emissions below a facility-specific baseline, which declines to zero emissions by 2050. Carbon credits must be used by the emitter to offset any emissions above its baseline, while emitting below baseline generates credits for the emitter. For an existing LNG plant, using technology to meet a baseline that eventually reaches zero requires large-scale plant modifications in the areas of carbon capture, alternative fuels, and electrification. These technologies are at different levels of readiness for deployment at large scale and need to be evaluated against the alternative of offsetting emissions. This presentation is an overview of the 2024 FEnEx CRC Commonwealth milestone report Short- and long-term options for LNG plant decarbonisation. The presentation will discuss large-scale decarbonisation solutions available for existing LNG plants, the technical readiness of these solutions, notable instances where they have been tested, and the degree of decarbonisation they will provide. #decarbonisation #gas #energy Luke McElroy Mauricio Di Lorenzo Eric May Mary Hackett

💡Is Eskom blowing the diesel budget to keep the loadshedding wolf at bay?💡 We looked at the data for the Open Cycle Gas Turbines (OCGTs), specifically the period from April 2024 when loadshedding stopped. Here’s what we found: https://lnkd.in/gxY8Mgx3 Between 1 April and 31 August 2024, the OCGTs generated 510 GWh of electricity. That’s not nothing, but it’s a lot less than the same period in 2023, when the OCGTs produced 2 359 GWh of electricity.

Germany is planning to establish a core #hydrogen fuel network covering a distance of over 9,700 km (6,000 miles) at an estimated cost of approximately 20 billion euros ($21 billion) by 2032. This network will rely on existing natural gas pipelines for about 60% of its infrastructure, connecting ports, industries, storage facilities, and power plants. The project will be PRIVATELY financed, and the aim is to expand hydrogen usage to decarbonize polluting industrial sectors, such as steel and chemicals, which are challenging to electrify.
