It has been announced that the UK’s first commercial drone mail service operation, in Orkney, is to be extended to 2026. The operation, named the Orkney I-Port operation, was launched by Royal Mail and drone firm, Skyports Drone Services, in August 2023. The drones carry letters and parcels between islands, where delivery staff then complete their usual delivery routes. The aim of the operation is to improve delivery times and service, as the poor weather and geography of the area can often cause disruption to deliveries in Orkney. The proliferation of drone operations, which a new PwC report predicts will double globally to 28 million by 2029, raises an urgent requirement for safe, efficient and sustainable unmanned traffic management (UTM) systems. In response to this fundamental shift in aviation infrastructure across the globe, PwC’s Global Centre of Excellence in Drone and Satellite Technologies’ new report sets out the fundamental importance of a coordinated approach among diverse stakeholders in the UTM ecosystem. These range from governments to air navigation service providers to telecoms companies and drone technology and service providers—and they must work together to keep the skies safe and find the most efficient ways to harness the transformative power of drone technology. ‘Strategic insights for thriving in the unmanned traffic management ecosystem’ shows the challenges but also the opportunities presented by this aviation revolution. As the drone industry experiences rapid growth, concerns about outdated regulations have prompted discussions with Transport Canada. The impending amendment to Canadian drone rules is poised to permit "beyond-visual line of sight" flights, a crucial development for expanding applications, notably in long-haul cargo deliveries. This change is expected to enhance efficiency and operational capabilities for businesses utilizing drones, encompassing sectors beyond imaging services, such as cargo transport and delivery services. https://lnkd.in/e3rbXzmu
A forthcoming amendment will enable drones to be used for more activities that are dull, dangerous and dirty, including long-haul flights, wildfire suppression and oil vessel inspections. “The last 10 years have been crazy in terms of drone proliferation and adoption,” says Dan Juhlin, chief regulatory officer at AERIUM Analytics, a Calgary-based company that provides industry-specific drone technology solutions. As a drone Consultant, I work closely with Potato Growers by assisting with advertising sales and drone precision agriculture through the newly branded “grower-owned” Northland Potato Grower Association Magazine.
The state of the airspace Skorup suggests a drone highway model in which states would lease state-owned aerial corridors above public rights of way — like highways and railroads — to drone companies, using avigation easements to fill in the gaps. An avigation easement would grant a state access to the airspace above private property without infringing on ownership. For example, many utility companies use a different kind of easement called an easement in gross to place things like telephone poles and pylons on private land. Skorup envisions drone highways flying over public rights of way and easements while operators are fed real-time data on temporary flight restrictions, physical infrastructure and population density through a company like Airspace Link. He believes that these provisions, in conjunction with measures like noise and time-of-day restrictions, can make highways in the sky a reality.

Which states are ready for commercial drone operations? Although we like to ask this question on the international plane (pun intended), there is also the topic of federal states and their respective laws. In this regard, the Mercatus Center at George Mason University has prepared a "drone readiness" index that is focused on US States. It provides a scorecard of which states have taken on the most adequate actions to embrace commercial drone operations. Have a look at it for your weekend read and enjoy the weekend ahead! And are you interested in an International "Drone Readiness Index"? CASA's new general exemption streamlines the approval process, enabling drone operators to perform operations more efficiently, especially in populated areas. This streamlined approach marks a substantial advancement for the drone industry in Australia, simplifying the process for #ReOC holders to carry out essential operations across a wider range of environments. By embracing and understanding these changes, operators can dedicate more attention to their missions and spend less time navigating regulatory challenges. It’s encouraging to see the recent changes being implemented in the right direction for ReOC holders. These updates are a significant step forward, simplifying the approval process and enhancing operational efficiency. By making it easier for drone operators to navigate regulatory requirements, CASA is helping to streamline operations and focus on what truly matters—conducting safe and effective drone missions. Exciting news in the world of drone delivery services! Royal Mail has launched its latest trial, this time delivering mail between two remote Scottish islands, Islay and Jura, in collaboration with Skyports and Argyll and Bute Council. This innovative trial, running until 26 July, showcases drones' potential in enhancing public services, partly funded by a £250,000 grant from the UK’s Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology. The multirotor drone, capable of carrying payloads up to 6kg, is the same one used in Royal Mail's previous Orkney trial, replacing the traditional ferry transport for mail delivery. This marks the sixth drone trial by Royal Mail, utilizing extended visual line of sight (EVLOS) flying for the second time, ensuring safety with 'trained observers' along the route. The challenging weather and geography of the Inner Hebrides necessitate innovative solutions for uninterrupted delivery services. Electric drones not only improve safety but also provide emissions savings, enabling postal workers to navigate between ports and marinas without risks associated with weather-related ferry interruptions. Another step forward in leveraging technology for efficient and secure service delivery! #drones #uk #delivery #mail
