The achievements of eight innovative projects that are pivoting Midlands #manufacturers into the high-growth space industry as part of a £1m R&D programme were recognised today at Farnborough Airshow.   The Pivot into Space programme, which is being led by the Midlands Aerospace Alliance with funding from the UK Space Agency – matched by industry – has already created a launchpad into the #space industry for nine small supply chain companies. The programme has not only provided grant funding worth £18,000 - £50,000 to each company, but also valuable technical and commercial guidance, access to industry contacts, exclusive events, and networking opportunities. The fast-track programme means that, following a rigorous assessment process by technology experts, the companies selected for the programme will have transformed their existing capabilities and technologies into potential solutions for space industry challenges within 12-18 months, with some already receiving customer interest. CEAS Aeronautical Journal Article “Acoustical Properties of the New Sandwich Structures for Aircraft Cabin Interiors with Integrated Vacuum Insulation” The integration of vacuum insulation into the sandwich structure of aircraft cabin interiors significantly enhances their thermal properties, allowing the elimination of conventional glass wool packages (secondary insulation) from use in the cabin. However, it's crucial to consider the impact of vacuum insulation on the acoustic properties of the interior sidewalls. In collaboration with co-authors Prof. Dr. Peter Middendorf, Dr. Dietmar Völkle, and Christoph Weber, we thoroughly examined the effect of vacuum insulation on the acoustic properties and identified new sandwich structures with integrated vacuum insulation that have the potential for use in the aircraft cabin. My thoughts on the new parks opening up in Mazatlán: just like any projects, there are pros and cons. The three big positives I see are: First: abundant labor as Mazatlán is not an industrial city. Second: exporting and shipping to west ports in the US should be fast and cheap. Third: I bet executives, customers and suppliers would love to visit the manufacturing facilities. #Mr.Nearshoring® #MexicoNearshoring #MexicoManufacturing

Dr Jack-James Marlow, Head of Engineering & Operations at Skyrora Ltd, argues that a national centre for engine development could be a shot in the arm for aerospace. The UK has a long history of aerospace innovation and we shouldn’t lose sight of this success. Just five decades ago, we saw the launch of Black Arrow and the development of iconic aircraft like Concorde and the Harrier Jump Jet. While these milestones should not be forgotten, we shouldn’t rest on our laurels and rely on nostalgia and historic excellence when it comes to aerospace.
