Habitat’s Jeff Head met with The Real Deal's Emma Whalen to discuss Illinois’ #AffordableHousingPlanningandAppealAct and the significant challenges it has faced over the past 20 years. As Vice President of Development at #HabitatAffordableGroup, Jeff highlights a crucial issue: the additional costs—both financial and emotional—developers face due to the extensive educational and political processes involved. As Jeff states, "Affordable housing gets a lot of people’s nerves agitated as it is. If there is a big education process and a significant political argument involved, it increases the financial cost and the emotional cost of going in and digging into an argument for a project that a significant portion of people don’t want." The recent amendments to the law aim to address these challenges by allowing local housing nonprofits and potential residents to appeal the denial of affordable housing proposals. These changes may provide a much-needed boost to affordable housing initiatives across the state. When you talk to people about the housing crisis, everyone will say we need a solution, but far fewer people would agree to support a solution that involves their own neighborhood. Those of us in affordable housing see this conundrum across state lines, including in Colorado. Yesterday, March 3rd, representatives of California Community Reinvestment Corporation virtually attended the National Housing Conference (NHC)’s “2024 Solutions for Housing Communications” convening. The event featured panels with pro-housing thought leaders, who joined to discuss the importance of accurate, subversive, and poignant storytelling when building public support for housing. Pro-housing advocacy must contend with the misinformed narratives on risk, public feelings of helplessness, and personal apathies that surround housing activism to mobilize all hands available to address the shortage. Outreach efforts must also take comprehensive steps to engage diverse perspectives, with the end goal being to make the fight as collective as possible.   Everyone has stock in an equitably housed nation, and engaging with solutions today will invariably improve the future for all.
