The legislation to ratify the New Zealand - European Union Free Trade Agreement (EU FTA) received Royal assent yesterday and will come into force on 1 May 2024! This agreement is expected to add over $1 billion to New Zealand’s GDP and will remove tariffs on New Zealand businesses exporting to the European market. As part of our agreement with the European Union, 1,975 European Union geographical indications (GIs) will be protected in New Zealand. New Zealand GIs will receive similar protection in the EU. Very few of the 1,975 terms that will be registered are currently being used in New Zealand on goods that do not come from Europe or meet the criteria for the specific geographical indication. For some key terms being used in this way in New Zealand, the businesses using them will need to phase out their use over a period of 5-9 years. We’ve got more information on our website to help businesses understand the changes: https://bit.ly/43CaYRF For information on the EU FTA see the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade website: https://bit.ly/3TQiDIM

Also, 2 things needed for export to EU : * MRN - Movement Reference Number (18 digits - 1st 2 digits are the year, then 2 letters representing the European country of destination) * ENS - Entry Summary Declaration (that also include the Import Control System ICS2). Must be filed at least 24 hrs before loading. The ENS includes the mentioning of the customs classification HS. IF no ENS filed, European customs can block the unloading of subjected cargo. And as usual, it is recommended to mention the HS on the commercial documents, not the HTS US (though HTS US and TARIC SEEM to look like each other, there are some differences that could delay the customs clearance. But this, that's another story !!)
