Closing out AAPI Heritage Month strong with Iris Hsu, IT Manager II for IT Investment and Performance Governance - Americas: What does AAPI Heritage Month mean to you? "It’s time to shatter some stereotypes! 😊 AAPIs come in many packages! This AAPI was born in Oklahoma and raised in Texas. I often forget that I’m AAPI because my eyes face outward. I don’t focus on the color of my skin or what my features look like. I focus on what the people around me need and how I can best serve them. So for me, AAPI Heritage Month is not specifically about AAPI. While that sounds ironic at first, please hear me out. At its core, I believe AAPI Heritage Month is a time to recognize and appreciate that America is comprised of people from many different ethnicities, and AAPI is one of the many. While it is an ongoing journey to truly bring equity to all people, learning about the American quilt of ethnicities is a great step in the right direction. I am a proud graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with a double major in management information systems and honors plan, and I hold a Master of Arts in global leadership from Fuller Theological Seminary. My journey in industry and consulting spans 23 years, focusing on corporate transformation, enterprise planning and execution, project and change management, and executive engagement. On a personal note, I am married to a fellow Texan of Hispanic descent, and we share a passion for animal rescue, caring for our two fur babies, Lily and Logan." I've been in and out of boardrooms, and frankly, I've seen adults act like babies multiple times. So, I don't see a problem with actual babies in boardrooms. I love this! The future of work includes radical flexibilty. Organizations with outdated expectations will continue to struggle with staffing. I do believe one can have it all (“all” is personally defined), sometimes you may have to design and build it for yourself because legacy systems don’t often support or trust that one can provide high value and have a fully balanced life with self-care at the same time. This is brilliant - and what an impressive competitive advantage! This is my soap box: women control 85% of consumer spending decisions, and 90% of Fortune 500 CEOs are men. Which means that *most* big corporations’ strategy is dependant on the assumption that men understand what women want. Not only does Bobbie have an impressive flexible working situation, they are clearly putting their target audience in key roles within their company. Congratulations to Nicolette Driscoll & the NeuroBionics team for winning the MIT Female Founders Pitch Competition. As one of the judging panel for this event, I'm happy to share some of the key points that helped Nicki win: - Very technical problem explained very clearly. >> NeuroBionics is not building a simple digital tool. There are scientific concepts and terminology in this business that would make your head spin. But Nicki was able to explain in almost exclusively laymen's terms the problem, the potential for impact, the solution, and their timeline and plans for the business. Everyone on the judging panel and everyone in the audience was able to follow along, even if you knew nothing about deep brain stimulation going in. - Handled challenges well. >> Nicki went first and ran into multiple tech issues out of her control - the mic didn't work, the slides didn't work. She was unflappable. She knew her material so well, the organizers offered to let her start over and she declined, opting to jump back into the presentation where she left off. She knows the pitch and her business like the back of her hand and it showed. She never showed anxiety or sweat from these issues. - Solving a big problem, explaining it memorably. >> Nicki was able to help us understand that in present day, only 1% of people who qualify for a certain surgery that could improve their lives actually get it because of the invasiveness and side effects. Their solution would save lives. It's been over a week and I still remember that stat. Advice to founders pitching: make your key impact memorable. Congratulations Nicki! The judges were extremely impressed with all of the founders who pitched on stage at the event. The caliber was unbelievably high this year. Great work to all who took the stage.
