Flower day on May 20th.. Flower Day is celebrated annually on May 20. It makes a toast to the beauty of flowers and the ways they are useful to us. On the holiday, environmentalists and conservationists create awareness about flower conservation and what can be done to save endangered flower species. There are also some flowers that regularly feature in our meals! Nutritious vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, and artichoke are actually flowers. Similarly, some flowers are used as spices, such as crocus (or saffron), cloves, and capers. Hops are used in beer, and dandelion and elderflowers are used in wines and cocktails. Moreover, some flowers are used to make herbal teas, while others are used as metaphors. For example, red roses symbolize love, poppies of death, iris and lilies of burial, and daisies of innocence. Artists and poets have also sought flowers as muses. However, caring for flowers is no mean feat! Flowers have their own unique requirements in terms of growth and health. Some flowers prefer to be in the shade, while others need sunlight. Still, others thrive in damp soil, while some require the soil to be on the drier side. It's World Bee Day! 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 The importance of World Bee Day is to acknowledge the role of bees and other pollinators for the ecosystem. Anyone who knows Alison, our founder will be aware that she absolutely loves bees, even to the point that she high fives them! Some bee facts - did you know... Honey bees sleep between 5 and 8 hours a day mostly at night when darkness prevents them from going out to collect pollen and nectar! Only female bees can sting! Almost 90% of wild plants and 75% of leading global crops depend on animal pollination. You can create your own bee environment by planting a range of flowers in your garden so bees have access to nectar from March to October. Bees love traditional cottage garden flowers and native wildflowers, like primrose, foxglove, and marigolds. Bees have smelly feet!!! Scientists from the University of Bristol have discovered that bumblebees have the ability to use their ‘smelly footprints’ to distinguish between their own scent, the scent of a relative and the scent of a stranger. We have assigned holiday meaning to certain plants and now associate them with the Christmas tradition. But how well do we actually know the plants of Christmas? Here are 5 seldom-known facts about 5 renowned Christmas plants: 1. POINSETTIA: A symbol of the Star of Bethlehem as well as a sign of good will and community spirit when gifted. Despite being called “the flower of Christmas,” the colorful top part of the poinsettia isn’t a flower – it’s a modified leaf (called bract). The actual yellow flowers (called cyathium) can be found clustered in the center of the bracts. 2. MISTLETOE: The symbol of a Christmas kiss. In fact being a tree parasite, mistletoe in a Christmas setting is associated with a kiss - a tradition that probably originated around the 1500s in Europe. The custom was one kiss per berry; no more berries - no more kisses. 3. HOLLY: A symbol of the festive season, being one among few plants that keep green leaves and red berries throughout the harsh winter. Holly is not a bush but a tree that can live up to 300 years, with only female plants bearing red berries - a precious winter food source for birds. 4. CHRISTMAS CACTUS - a common houseplant that blooms during the Christmas season, hence the name. For the flower buds to develop, it needs 14 hours of continuous darkness daily for up to 2 months - a time often referred to as “beauty sleep”. 5. CHRISTMAS TREE: The ultimate plant symbol of Christmas. Despite the uniform image we may have in mind, though, Christmas trees take different forms and shapes geographically. Yes, a fresh bouquet means instant beauty; it is more sustainable to plant a few tulips or daylilies, or some phlox or daffodils, and they’ll come back every year. Buy favorite flowers only when they’re in season and get to know what is locally available at different times of the calendar.
